says Oregon geographic names by McArthur calls French Prairie the area
between Pudding River and Willamette, north of Salem, it was named for
retired Hudson's Bay trappers living there, mostly French-Canadian.
says french prairie was along the south(east) bank of willamette river around
champoeg, oregon in the very northern tip marion co OR. the hudsons bay co
encouraged retired trappers, or when they'd put in required # years they
(mostly french canadians) would settle at french prairie.

on Donald Manson (the elder), b. 1798 Thurso, Scotland, d. Mar. 1880
Champoeg; m. Oct. 1828 to Felicite (d. 1867) dau. of Etienne LUCIER and
his Nouite wife. They had 5 children by 1841, one dying young.
Unfortunately it didn't name all of them. Oldest was William, and of
course the dau. Anna who m'd Isaac OGDEN. Of the other two by 1841, it
does say he had a son Stephen (actually Etienne, of which Stephen is the
Anglicized version of the French name) named for Etienne Lucier, who was
at school at the Mission at the time of the massacre. I do hate
articles that don't give complete genealogical information!;
