    .
..The Birmingham New of Feb 21, 1905 had the story at the top of page 1.

`Over 100 lives probably lost at VA Mines.  ..........Little or no hope
were held out for the entombed men but the rescue work goes on day and night.
The death role included a total of 112 miners who died in the coal
mining accident in Virginia City in Western Jefferson Co .  All the
miners inside the mine west of Bessemer died in a `dust explosion` and from
the resulting release of toxic fumes.  The cause was believe to be an
improperly loaded charge lad by one of the first shift workers.  Our
ancestor, William M Dixon  was listed within the death roll as one of
the unfortunates still entombed in the VA mine.  His name was listed
    as:  W.M Dickenson.
