  • ID: I5462
  • Name: Abel Morgan 1
  • Sex: M
  • Title: Rev.
  • Birth: 1673 in Alltgoch, Llanwenog, Cardiganshire, Wales
  • Death: 16 DEC 1722 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA
  • Note:
His 4 children were born between 1715-1722.

Abel Morgan was born in 1673 at Alltgoch, Llanwenog, Cardiganshire, Wales. His father, Morgan Rhydderch, died about 1680 when Abel was about seven years old. His mother Jane remarried to John Griffith, making John Griffith the step-father of the four children of Morgan Rhydderch.
Abel began preaching at Llanwenarth when he was nineteen years old (1692). He was called to Blaenan Gwent in 1697, was ordained there in 1700, and remained as minister until 1711 (Ref. 2) when he left for America. While still in Wales, he married Priscilla Powell of Abergavenny, Wales, who bore him two children: daughter Jane and a son known only as "Boy Morgan" (who died at sea on the 15th of December, 1711).

Rev. Abel Morgan, born 1673, died December 16, 1722, he was a native of Wales, emigrated to Pennsylvania, and from 1711 to 1712 was pastor of the Pennypack Baptist Church. He landed at Philadelphia, February 14, 1712. He was the main organizer of the churches at Brandywine, Westchester County, and of Montgomery. He also aided in forming the church at Hopewell in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He died at the early age of forty nine years, and his remains were buried in the rear of the Baptist meeting house in La Grange Place, but were moved to Mt. Moriah cemetery. The greatest work of his life was the preparation of the Welsh Concordance of the Holy Scriptures.
The family emigrated to America in 1711. They sailed from Bristol on the 28th of September, 1711. There were considerable delays and hardships and they finally left from Cork, Ireland on the 19th of November, 1711.

First wife: Abel's wife Priscilla and the young son both died enroute. Priscilla died Dec 17, 1711. He and daughter Jane reached Philadelphia on the 14th of February, 1712 (Ref. 2).

Second wife: He reportedly married a Martha Burrows as his second wife, but nothing more is known of her.

Third wife: He then married Judith (Griffith) Gooding. Judith Griffith was the daughter of Rev. Thomas Griffith who led a group of sixteen people to America in 1701 (this group included Abel's younger brother Enoch Morgan). Their children were Rachel, Abel Morgan, Jr., Samuel and Enoch. Abel Jr. and Samuel are recorded as being born at Welsh Tract, Newcastle, Delaware.

Abel was very active in establishing Baptist churches in the area, including a church that became an Academy and, eventually, Brown University. He also wrote a Welsh Concordance which was published posthumously. He died on the 16th of December, 1722, at the age of forty-nine and is buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Wife Judith lived till about 1768 and is noted to have had a third husband, Mr. Fulton.

Abel Sr had four children. They married into the Holmes, Howell, Sprogle, and Keen families. This is according to the published information of the time, received from Arch.
Upon his arrival in America he assumed charge of of the Pennepek Baptist Church, with it's branch in the city of Philadelphia, which relationship he retained until his death.
