Above all genealogy is a rational pursuit, a logical puzzle. Given that certain things can go together only in one way (each person has 1 father and 1 mother; a name mentioned in a record can only refer to 1 individual), success must be judged first by consistency and then by evidence. Genealogy is like Arithmetic in that way: consistent but never complete. There are genealogical truths that can never be proven, yet remain true.
