According to Alfred's obituary in the Springfield Daily Republican of Aug. 8, 1914, he had lived in the south and west for a period of twenty years, and was a "sheep raiser and ranch man in Texas." At the time of his death he had been back on the family farm in West Brookfield for twenty years, serving the town of West Brookfield on the school board for 18 years. He was a member of the West Brookfield Farmers' Club, a Mason and a past master of the West Brookfield grange.
