Note: 3 3 2 3 Georg 'Balthasar', wife Anna and sons Martin and Peter departed Saarbrucken around May of 1748 with Christian ' Caspar' Neufang probably a cousin. The Saarbrucken recorder noted "Geo. Balthasar" was granted permission to depart Saarland "nach Psy." (for Pennsylvania). They would have departed England by June and probably landed in America by August or September. Ship name unknown.
The tax or census of families who "live beyond the First Ridge of Mountains on Schuylkill" as collected by Geo. Mock, collector 1753, lists Balthasar along with 36 other men living in this very exposed area, where at the beginning of the French-Indian war they were attacked. Balthasars 1st wife Anna Was killed by Indians on 6 Mar 1756, and his #2 son, Peter age abt. 8 yrs. was taken by them. Peter was recovered and returned to Governor Hamilton by Teedyuscung the Delaware chief on Dec. 1, 1759. When Peter was returned, he could no longer speak German. (Volume 29 of Provincial Papers, page 80. in the Div. of Archives and History. State Library at Harrisburg, PA.) A number of the other settlers were killed, and most were driven back beyond the Blue Mtn.s. (By late 1756 the area north of the Blue Mountains was abandoned and militia scouts reported 347 vacant farms. As a result of this war, over 300 Pennsylvania settlers would die. Balthasar and others probably took refuge at Fort Lebanon (just a few miles south of his homestead) before moving his remaining family to the Winsor Township just south of the mountains on the northeast side of the Schuylkill River.
Sometime after Balthasar remarried he left his family and joined the "2nd Battalion of the Pennsylvania Regiment". This Regiment was not a local militia unit but a regular provincial regiment raise to support the British Army. Enlistment was normally for three years. The exact date when Balthasar entered is not known but he probably did not join until after his second marriage. The muster lists for the 2nd in Pennsylvania Archives are very incomplete but Koch found a report that Balthasar was serving in the unit in Dec. of 1759. The 2nd Battalion was formed before April of 1756 under Lieutenant Colonel John Armstrong. Balthasar may have been with the regiment by July of 1758 when it served along side George Washington and his Virginia regiment in a campain to take Fort DuQuesne, (located where Pittsburg now stands). When Peter Neufang was released by Teedyuscung on Dec. 1, 1759, records show that Balthasar was a private, still serving in the 2nd Battalion of the Pennsylvania Regiment.
The following information is included even though it is though that this record is for Caspar Neufang's son, Balthasar. (Enlisted 15 July 1776-Pvt. in Benjamin Weisers Co., of the General Batt. of Continental troops Commanded by Col. Nicholas Haussegger, in barracks, Philidelphia, Oct. 3, 1776. Served under Anthony Wayne. Was at Trenton, Princeton and in May 1777 was in Debores Brigade of Sullivans division. (Pennsylvania Germans in the Revolutionary war. page 207-208 Roster of the German regiment.) Note: This Balthasar my be the son of Caspar and not our Balthasar who would have been pretty old.)
