(Research):I have read the Adair County Tax Rolls, as microfilmed by the LDS church (film #0007851), and Michael Grant does not appear on them until 1812. In 1817, there was a second Michael Grant listed in the county; he owned no land, and lived in a different taxing district than my Michael Grant. In 1820 Samuel Grant is first listed on the tax rolls, in the same district as Michael.

Our library had a small book filed in the family genealogy section called "Grant Family" by Glenna L. Deal. It appeared to be a collection of Ms. Deal's miscellaneous Grant research notes that had been donated to our library and bound up in book form. In this book was the following notation dealing with an order on 8 May 1770 in Rowan County NC:
"Rachel Grant, orphan of James Grant, dec'd, 12, bound to William Grant for 6 years as is Michael Grant, 3, for 18 years to learn art and mastry of a weaver."
After finding this I double-checked our books for Rowan County and found the same entry, as well as a few more pertaining to James Grant, who was in Rowan County as early as 1757. A few lines down from Michael, a David Grant, orphan, age 7, was bound in 1771 to William Moore. At this point, I'm interested, but not convinced - especially since we have no reason to think that our Michael Grant was ever in NC.
When I got home I started reading up on the William Grant of Rowan County NC. Turns out that this is probably the William Grant (b. 1726) who married Elizabeth Boone, sister of Daniel Boone. Because of the Boone connection, William Grant's line was well traced, but I can find no mention of a James Grant. William Grant's father was also named William Grant; he came from Scotland, born about 1700. There are no other children of his (William Sr) who have been traced - so it's certainly possible that James Grant was William Sr's son.
From what I've read about the younger William Grant, he lived primarily in Rowan County NC, until the Indian Wars escalated, and then he (and the others living there) would take their families and retreat into Virginia until things quieted down. For example, it's well documented that they left NC in 1761, moved into Virginia (where William had a son born); eventually they moved back to NC where they stayed until about 1777 when William (the younger) and his family moved to Boonesboro, Kentucky with the Daniel Boone group. Daniel Boone was captured by the Indians in 1778 and hauled off into captivity; eventually William Grant took the whole bunch back to North Carolina until 1780 when they returned to KY. William Grant lived at Boonesville (or Boone's Station) in present day Fayette County until his death in 1804. William and Elizabeth had these children: Mary, John, Israel, Sarah, William, Samuel, Squire, Elizabeth, Moses, Hannah and Rebecca.
Now - back to Michael. After realizing that this bunch migrated into Kentucky very early and probably would have taken this Michael Grant with them, I checked the early KY tax lists. From a book called Bourbon County, KY taxpayers, 1787-1799, this is what I found:
    1787 - John Grant
    1788 - Christohorry (?) Grant, John Grant
1789 - John Grant, William Grant Sr. (this would be the William born 1726, not his father)
1790 - Israel Grant, Michael Grant
    1791 - Michael Grant
    1792 - Israel Grant
    1793 - no Grants
1794 - incomplete records, only about 10 names total
    1795 - no Grants
1796 - Christopher Grant, John Grant
1797 - Christian Grant, George Grant, John Grant
    1798 - no records
1797 - Christiana Grant, Daniel Grant, George Grant, John Grant

I also found Michael Grant signed an undated petition (which was rejected in 1788) along with John Grant, and another petition in 1788 along with Israel Grant and John Grant.
I don't know who the Chirstohorry/Christopher/etc. Grant belongs to, nor I have placed George or Daniel Grant. But the published information clearly ties the John and Israel mentioned on the above tax rolls to William Grant 1726-1804.
So - my theory is that Michael's father was named James (probably no surprise there since he named his first child James), Michael was born about 1767 in either Virginia or North Carolina, that he was apprenticed to William Grant in 1770, that he moved with the William Grant/Daniel Boone families to early KY, appeared on the 1790 and 1791 Kentucky tax rolls, and moved to Georgia after 1791 in hopes of securing cheap land. Michael appears on the Georgia tax rolls as early as 1803 (Franklin County), and also appeared in 1805, but returned to Kentucky by 1806. I believe he is in Adair County KY in 1810, despite not being listed by the census taker.
