!NOTES: Papers found in trunk at G.W. Kennedy home in Talladega, AL, "George Washington Kennedy, (b. 2 June 1848) participated in a Ku Klux Klan raid on a Negro cabin. The Negroes were waiting for them; there was a melle in which George Kennedy got his throat cut, not fataly but badly. He left the County that night to avoid identification. Reportedly he came to Texas." (When Norbert Patrick Moran was told this story about his grandfather, he remarked that he remembered a large scare on the neck of his grandfather which extended across the throat to just under the lobe of the right ear.) The family story told of the night he left indicates that he did not go to Texas but instead went to St. Louis. When he got off the train he happened to meet Josephine & Heinrich Schulthies and they gave him a place to stay. Apparently he stayed and helped around the house and eventually married Josephine a year and 1/2 after Heinrich died.
