“The Descendents of Francis Poythress”
This entry intends make accessible the index cards of Robert Bolling Bat te (RBB) and his source references available at the Library of Virginia 's internet site.
I also explain how this database came to be. What some call a gedcom, I c all a database because to quote Wikipedia, “a database is a structured co llection of records or data that is stored in a computer system.” I fi nd it more descriptive.
When I first came across the Batte card collection, I found it rather bewi ldering. Cli ck to view opening page. I could see it also contained valuable infor mation about Virginia family history. At the most fundamental leve l, it is what it appears to be the digitalization of a 3” by 5” card inde x. To the creator, the paper cards would have been a pretty fast way to l ocate individuals and connect to other individuals in their family on t he traditional genealogical chart. However, as scanned images with nam es and numbers that weren’t always applicable or significant, using the ca rds images quickly is a different matter.
In this study, I tried to bring Mr. Batte’s collection into the computer a ge by interconnecting the cards in ways only computers can do. I have tri ed to provide sources where I can on each entry, most frequently back to t he original card at the Library of Virginia internet site.
It should be noted that I have estimated many birth and death dates Bat te never added. I hoped to work with the prevailing rules at the rootsweb /ancestry site where the absence of dates is sometimes is interpreted inco rrectly as an indication that an entry represents a living person. Dat es should also to help researchers better pinpoint their searches more acc urately.
I have discovered is that in some trying to estimates dates is impossib le and indicates a problem with the lineage
I understand in the best of circumstances, the potential for mistakes is s omewhat large. I have used the sign “~ “ to mean probably. Mr. Batte as sumes his card file represents Virginians, but I have tried to make this m ore explicit, while preserving some wiggle room I have used “before” and “ after” rather liberally. At times it may be off by a decade or mor e. Or it may be off in slightly the wrong direction. I tried to triangul ate from ancestors and descendents Batte did provide and from siblings a nd sibling order. It has been a rather cheeky enterprise, as I will be t he first to admit. I am making estimates based on his estimates. As ma ny colonial women married at an early age, it expands the possible err or in estimating dates.
I cannot stress too often that looking at the card images is the best w ay for you to determine for yourself the merit of all the information her e. The work here should be your jumping off point for you own research.
LOOKING AT THE CARDS
When you consult the original card images at the LVA, you will find the so urce references as letters and numbers along the right edge of the index c ards.
Additional information below comes mainly from the same group of cards onl ine at the LVA in the miscellaneous section, Source A-O, Source P-Z, and P ublications. At the end of this entry, I include my advice on using the ca rds at t he LVA to extend or complement the use of this database.
The LVA says of RBB's system: "In the key to the sources a letter indicat es the type of document and the number indicates either the county or a sp ecific item. For example, A3 stands for Petersburg birth registers, B23 st ands for Charles Washington Friend Bible, and P81 stands for the publish ed title Rebirth of the Old Dominion. (A = birth register, 3 = Petersbur g; B = family Bible, 23 = Charles Washington Friend Bible; P = publicatio n, 81 = Rebirth of the Old Dominion.) "
Many place names refer to counties, and many counties changed boundaries a nd names over the history of the colony and the state. Mr. Batte often no tes the changes, but many times he does not. If in doubt, the Libra ry of Virginia sells an excellent book of maps that shows the counti es as their lines changed throughout most of the 400 years of Virginia's e xistence.
ABBREVIATIONS
Among the frequent abbreviations: MHB: Member of House of Burgesses; MH D, Member, House of Delegates; CSA, Confederate States of America; H-S, H ampden-Sydney College; VMI, Virginia Military Institute; R-M, Randolph Mac on College; PT with dates, probably means prior to; and ST, subsequent t o, “c”:circa or about. D.S.P. or dsp is Latin abbreviation of "decessit si ne prole" which translates to "died without issue." The < > brackets ind icate a burial place, as in . "_" around a place na me, usually indicates a house or estate name, but not all the places indic ated are necessarily grand although many were. The names were important w hen street and road numbers did not exist. "V" between two numbers refe rs to the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography with the volum e, V, followed by page.
FAMILY IDENTIFIERS
Mr. Batte uses various ways to link his families together, but the major o ne for his families of greatest interest is a combination of letters and n umbers to show each person's relation to the immigrant ancestor. I beg an with (P-1) which stands for Francis Poythress in the list below. Do n ot confuse the P families with the publication list, or the B families wi th the bible lists. (P-2) represents John Peterson. In the publication l ist those identifiers do have alternate meanings, but the source indicato rs are usually presented along the right side of the index card, and the p eople indicators are next to the name.
Not all families have individual ID codes. The cards explaining many of t he family code keys are among the card groups, usually at the beginni ng of the first group in a new letter of the alphabet. Some are simply in ferred from reading the cards.
As a hypothetical example, a card reference (P-2) ABA CDF would indica te that the person is descendent of (A) the first child of (P-2), the ( B) second child of that person, the (A) first child of that person, the ( C) third child of that person, the fourth (D) child of that person, the ( F) sixth child of that person. Mr. Batte also used numbers to indicate fa mily genealogy, but seldom in the cards.

SOME PRACTICAL ADVICE
Because I didn't include all person's in Mr. Batte's card file, I am offer ing some practical advice for using the LVA images of R. Bolling Batte's t yped and handwritten index cards. Click to view op ening page.
I have provided under source, the card group name and card number for t he individuals here. At times the cards contain valuable extracts of wil ls and land patents and deeds or transcriptions of family tombstones. S ome cards contain charts or suggestions or questions.
To extend or examine the cards for your family groups you may wish to down load some cards.
Download the family name of interest into a folder with the same name as u sed by the LVA. Use one of any number of photo reading programs to view t humbnails and/or enlarged cards with arrow icons or such to move from o ne card to the next like a slide show. In other words, you want to be ab le to duplicate the author's approach to extracting information. Large th umbnails can speed the process. (I have used ACDsee for years, and fi nd it helpful.)
Some researchers save or print out the whole browser page, but I recomme nd that you save only the card image itself on your computer. You can pri nt it later. Put the cursor inside the image on the LVA page. Right cli ck and select your program's equivalent of "save image as." Save to the f older you create or have created earlier. Enlarging the image first does n ot change its download size. The cards are in gif format and numbered. Ea ch group uses the same image numbers, so caution is advised. I change for mats-- gif to jpeg--with my photo program. This is required by my progr am for the orientation to be rotated. A fair number of cards were scann ed upside down, and a few are sideways. Also be aware that it is possib le to download two or more images from the internet at the same time unle ss you have a very old computer setup. I found that five windows or “tab s” is the ideal number. You can right click on your PC toolbar, and casca de the windows if you are using separate windows. Using the LVA +5 link m akes it possible to get through this process quickly. Save one image, whi le others are downloading. Cards are numbered one through 100 or more.
Cards groups are in alphabetical order, just as you would expect th em to be in a library card catalog. Each group is like a drawer. Often t he family name is entirely within a group of cards with another surna me as its heading. This is true for the Atkinsons, for example, who a re w holly contained in the "Atkins" group. Usually, a family placement c an be inferred from the alphabetical list. "Bowcock" contains "Bowde n, " " Bowe," and "Bowling." The usual order is alphabetical, with marri ed women --surname (maiden)--after single women, but mixed with the me n. If there is more than one person with the same name, the oldest usual ly come first unless, as with the Epes, there is a family line progressi on of similar names. Those families tend to be grouped. That is the ide al and the usual, but regrettably, that is not always the case. You may mi ss what you are looking for if you always expect the LVA scanned car ds to follow that pattern. RBB's family and individual identification let ters or numbers can help ensure the correct family members or matched toge ther.
Most people have a "card" with a "front" and a "back," (eg two images) b ut some just have a scanned front. A few have five images. Women in Batte 's more important family groups have a card in their maiden name group a nd their married name group. If a woman married more than once, it is pos sible she will have cards under each husband's surname, but not always. U sually, the most information for women is under the surname group of her h usband. The children are most often listed with the father on his card. So metimes the children are in the card collection but not spelled out on t he father 's card. On rare occasions, the children are on the mother's ca rd.
I have observed some quirky things about the LVA digital collection.. T he Ravenscroft family group appears to be missing entirely though it was o bviously created by Mr. Batte for he makes repeated references to it. T he Jones and Epes are in separate groupings. The Jones family have sever al groups. The Field group (which contains "Feild" and no people spelli ng their name "Field"), is followed the Fendall group. The Feilds actual ly begin in the Featherston group. This is also true for a few others, inc luding Green and Bland. Be aware that at times the cards are out of ord er (the Pryors and the BatteR group, for example). Sometimes, as with t he Armisteads and the Battes, those that can't be placed in the general fa mily scheme are put at the end of the group. Other quirks: The Tayloe gr oup has one Tayloe, Rebecca, but consists mainly of the Taylor family wi th first names starting with R. For Tayloes, see Tarleton, Card 68-111. T he "Osbourne" group contains only "Osbornes." The Jones Brunswick gro up appears to be a subs et of the Abraham-T.Haney group. At rare times ca rds are misfiled out of group or the flip side is scanned first. A few "bl ank" cards are mixed in. At times, the surname is correct but the first n ame is out of alphabetical order. Some cards within a family are inexplic ably missing. Some cards are just misfiled entirely or misfiled with an a ssociated family. {e.g. Armat, Card 50, contains Anne Wallace}.
Sometimes Mr. Batte writes a large script "E" over an entire card or pa rt of it as if to "erase" all the data under it sometimes or just a stri ke through. Mr. Batte appears to reuse many index cards this way, particu larly in his publications list. Some cards are written in a different han d.
To sum up: the Library of Virginia and Mr. Batte's index cards provide a r ich resource for researchers, but neither is infallible.
New facts or interpretations may realign some of the families here. Mr. Ba tte adjusted his work many times in is own lifetime. Some disagree with h is interpretation. I try to adjust family lines if the evidence is clear- cut. Nevertheless, by interpreting him where he is unclear, I may have go ne too far at times. Users should explore the cards and the sources and m ake their own judgments.
I have added some more recent families when correspondents have provided s ources or have demonstrated a willingness to accept emails for those who m ight discuss the sources with them. I have made the determination to add m ore material on a case by case basis. I have added a few more names with i nformation obtained outside the database. By and large, the reason for t he database remains the same: to make R. Bolling Batte’s work more accessi ble.
