Some in the family claim that William came from Ireland, others that his r eal name was Montour and that his family had been a French and Indian m ix for many generations. In the 1860 and 1870 Censuses, eight of his elev en children stated that he was NOT foreign born, but that their mother wa s. In the 1870 Census, William and Mary's places of birth were given as Pe nnsylvania and Ireland, respectively.
The Slate Lick Reformed Presbyterian Church is the current name of the chu rch next to the cemetery, but the cemetery itself retains the old name a nd is completely seperate from the church, as far as ownership and mainten ance are concerned.
William is the known ancestor of the vast majority of Minteers who live i n, or descend from people who lived in, Armstrong, Butler, and Lawrence Co unties in PA, as well as a few in Mahoning County, OH.
He is my great-great-great-great-grandfather. He and his wife, Mary Nichol son, had thirteen children, twelve of whom lived to adulthood and had chil dren of their own. One of the twelve lines ended with the third generatio n, but all the rest are going strong, into the eighth, ninth, and tenth ge nerations.
