Jacob Negley Homestead
East Liberty Valley, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Jacob built his home on corner of North Negley & Stanton Ave., in 1796 wh en Pittsburgh had 102 houses.
Mr. Jacob Negley, whose wife had been a Winebiddle, and consequently, inhe rited much real estate, controlled practically what is now known as East L iberty Valley, in the early days, called Negleystown. He was largely instr umental in erecting a small frame school building at what subsequently bec ame the corner of Penn and South Highland avenues.
This was for the accommodation of the children of the district, as we ll as his own. It was a long distance to the then established churches, a nd Mr. Negley very often, for the benefit of the neighborhood, invited so me minister passing through, or one from one
of the other churches, to preach in his own house and later in the scho ol house.
In 1819 the little school house was torn down to make way for a church bui lding.
The population of Pittsburgh in this time period numbered about 1,400 peop le.
