John and Martha were married by Thomas Enoch, Esqr., A Pitt sburgh alderman.
He died in Des Moines Twp, Jasper Co, Iowa and i s buried in the Vandalia Cemetery near Prairie City and Van dalia Iowa.
John was a vetern of the War of 1812. He served as a priva te for three months under Captain David Boyle. He was in t he Minute Men Regiment, commanded by Colonel Miller from ab out 10 December 1813 to 10 March 1814.
The family lived in Buffalo Twp until 1847 when they m oved to Jasper Co, Iowa. They traveled with friends an d relatives including the George Anderson, David Hunnel, an d George Walter families. George Anderson and George Walte r were both married to Hunnells.
John was a leader in organizing county and local government . The first election in the county was held in his home . He was an election judge for many years in the county, t ownship, and school district elections.
