"Matilda's parents were well off in Ireland. When they prepared to leave for America they converted all their wealth into money and placed in an iron chest to bring on the boat with them. They were shipwrecked off the coast of Londonderry and drifted for days having to pump water out of the boat to keep it from sinking. After the men were worn out and could not stand alone they were tied to the mast and made to take turns. Everything except what they had on their bodies had to be thrown overboard and the chest of money went too. The people were taken back to port, then, for a new start."
