Note: SIOUX CITY -- Lois Irene Chartier, 89, Sioux City passed away Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital after a lengthy illness. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Craig Collison and Deacon Bruce Chartier officiating. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Bluff View Cemetery in Vermillion, S.D. Visitation will be 4:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes. Lois was born Aug. 1, 1922, in Richland, S.D., the daughter of Clemence and Vina (Harkness) Riehle. She was raised on a farm in the Burbank, S.D., area and graduated from University High School in 1940. She married Aaron Coffee on Nov. 8, 1942, in Minnesota. After their marriage the couple lived in the Elk Point, S.D., Vermillion and Burbank area. Aaron died in May 1967. Lois worked part time for Palmer Candy Company in Sioux City for eight years. On July 27, 1968, Lois married Harold Chartier at Sacred Heart Church in Sioux City. After their marriage the couple lived in Sioux City. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing cards, fishing, bowling, bingo and going out to eat. She was a former member of Eagles' Auxiliary in Vermillion. What was most important to her was spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Harold of Sioux City; a daughter, Bonnie Cannon of Gastonia, N.C.; a son, Lowell (Pat) Coffee of Richland; stepchildren, Kay Dunn of Ames, Iowa, Gary Chartier of Canton, S.D., Bruce (Terri) Chartier of Sioux City and Joan (John) Eveland of North Sioux City; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Adeline Isaacson and Shirley Riehle, both of Vermillion; a brother, Larry (Kathy) Riehle of Rapid City, S.D.; a sister-in-law, Evie Riehle of Vermillion; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Aaron; two brothers, Lawrence and Edward; and two sisters, Cleo Haakinson and Mary Lee Cusick. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland. The family expresses gratitude for the care given to Lois by the staff at Hospice of Siouxland, sixth and seventh floors at Mercy Medical Center and Dr. Elizabeth McInerney. .
