Info from his own diary that he kept throughout the Civil War, located in a museum in Cleburne, TX. He was born 17 Dec 1830, died 9 May 1864 at Princeton, AR. The very last entry in the diary was written by his Lt. J. H. Ross, stating: "Capt Smith died at the town of Princeton, Ark. May the 9th 1864 with pneumonia." They had left Camden,AR on "1864 April 29 Saturday"--in his own words.
