    WILL OF JOHN STEED

    IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN: I John Steed of the County of
    Brunswick and Parrish of Meherrin knowing that it is appointed
    for all men once to die, and being of a perfect sound disposing
    mind and memory, do make and ordain this my last Will and
    Testament in the manner following: My Soul I give to God who
    gave it being, relying on the merits of my Saviour Christ for
    my Salvation, and my body to be decently interred according to
    the discretion of my Executors, And in regard to the Worldly
    Goods it hath pleased God to bestow on me I dispose of as
    followeth:
    IMPREMIS: that all my just debts be paid.
    ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Ann Steed during
    her natural life the plantation whereon I now live, and after
    her death to revert to my son Mark Steed his heirs or assigns.
    ITEM: I lend to my wife aforesaid during her natural life the
    following slaves, Jacob, Tony, Tugg, a woman, Sampson, Andrew
    and Peter Boys and Hannah a girl, also all my stock of horses,
    Cattle, Hoggs and Sheep, also two beds and furniture, together
    with every kind of household furniture, all which slaves, Stock
    &c to be continued on the plantation during my wife's life and
    the profits arising from the same to be appropriated towards
    the discharging the debts I owe, and it is my Will and desire
    that my son Mark Steed have the management of the plantation,
    Negroes and Stock of all and every kind until the death of my
    wife.
    ITEM: I give to my Son Mark Steed and to his heirs my
    proportion of a Black Horse purchased of Daniel Huff.
    ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Abigal Atkins and
    her heirs a Negro woman named Tugg.
    ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my son John Steed and to his
    heirs a Negro boy named Sampson.
    ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Winnyford Steed a
    Negro man named Tony, and a bed and furniture commonly called
    her bed to her and her heirs forever.
    ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Anne a Negro fellow
    named Jacob, also a bed and furniture commonly called hers to
    her and her heirs forever.
    ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my son Phillemon Steed and his
    heirs, two Negroes VIZ:-- Andrew and Peter.
    ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Martha Moseley and
    her heirs a Negro girl named Hannah.
    ITEM: I give unto my son Nathaniel Steed and his heirs a
    feather bed and furniture.
    ITEM: I give unto my son Moses Steed and his heirs a feather
    bed and furniture.
    It is my will and desire that after the death of my wife that
    all my goods of every kind be sold and the money arising
    therefrom to be divided in equal proportions among my children,
    and their heirs. I do hereby constitute and appoint my loving
    wife Anne Steed and my son Mark Steed Executors of this my last
    Will and Testament declaring this to be my last Will and
    revoking every one by me made heretofore.
    IN WITNESS whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my
    seal this thirteenth day of June Anno Domini one thousand seven
    hundred and eighty five.

    Brunswick County Court, 26th of January 1789.

    This Will was proved by the oath of Henry Walker a Witness
    thereto and Allan Love the other Witness thereto being dead,
    the said Henry Walker being sworn declareth that he saw said
    Allan Love subscribe his name as a witness thereto, which was
    considered by the Court to be sufficient Testimony, and ordered
    the same to be recorded, and on the motion of Mark Steed one of
    the Executors therein mentioned, and he having given Bond with
    Security and taken the oath according to law, Certificate is
    granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.

    County of Brunswick to--wit:

    I, Willie B. Abernathy, a Deputy Clerk of the Circuit Court
    for the County of Brunswick, State of Virginia do hereby
    certify that the above is a true copy of the Will of John
    Steed, probated on the 26th day of January 1789 and recorded in
    Will Book No 5 page 281.
    Given under my hand and seal this 29th day of May 1961.

    According to Mrs. Joel Condor Steed: "In 1734, he deeded land
    to Robert Morgan, and the document was witnessed by Francis
    Steed, Jr., indicating they were acquainted, if not related."
    In 1739, he received a land grant from King George II for 150
    acres, south of the Meherrin River and north of Fountain's
    Creek in Brunswick County.
    According to Brunswick County Deed Book 3, he witnessed an
    "indenture made 3 March 1745 between John Carrell of St.
    Andrews Parish, Brunswick County, and William Huff of same, 6,
    50a. Signed John Carrell. Memorandum dated 3 March 1745 ref:
    delivery of peaceable possession &; seisin. Witnesses: John
    Wall, Junr. and John Steed. Court March 6, 1745, Indenture and
    Memorandum acknowledged by John Carrell." Deed Book 3, Page
