Note: Lemaster (1965) states the following from Vaughn, 256, "The two pioneer b rothers (he is referring to John, 202, Eleazer, 204) were farmers and h unters. They and their sons built large log houses and cleared extensi ve tracts of land. Incidentally the places they picked for homesteads w ere very scenic, near to Paint Creek which at that time teemed with lar ge fish. In the 1830s and 1840s the men were required to take two week s of military training each year. This assembly was known as "The Must er." Several of the sons of both Eleazer and John attended the muster f or a number of years, near Prestonburg on the Big Sandy River in Easter n Kentucky. My grandfather told me an interesting story which reveals m uch regarding the personality of these men. One year on the last day o f muster, two men got up on a knoll and challenged any two men to come f orward and fight them. (This was not uncommon among the pioneers and s uch challengeres were called bullies.) For a long time there were no t akers and these two bullies eager for a fight became abusive. The doub le cousins, each known as Big Frank became angry, rushed forward and fl attened the challenging men very quickly."
