Note: Obituary, Interlaken Review, 10/24/1891: J.S. Travis, whose death occurred at his home in Ovid Centre, 10/1, was born in the town of Covert 12/25/1821. In 1842 he married Miss Jane Noble of Enfield. In the early part of the year 1866 he came to Ovid Centre and purchased the farm where he lived at the time of his death. In 1873 his wife died leaving him two sons, Adelbert A. and Don S., the former of whom resides in Enfield; the latter in Ovid Centre. In 1875 he married for his second wife Mrs. Mary H. VanLiew, who survives to mourn her loss. "The funeral took place at Trumbull's Corners 10/3, where his remains were taken for burial, Rev. O. J. Rose conducting the services. During the last 2 years of his life it became his lot to endure great suffering, which he bore with great patience and in a submissive spirit. Mr. Travis was beloved by all who knew well [sic]. Being of a retiring disposition, it required time to mature and ripen friendship with him but once formed it was a source of continual pleasure. He was a loving husband and father, a true friend and neighbor, and as such his loss will be felt deeply by all. In speaking of him the most important event of his life must not be passed without mention. When a young man he was lead to seriously consider his duty religiously, which resulted in his giving his heart to Christ. Though saying but little publicly on this subject, his life witnessed to his regard for the principles of the gospel, for those principles were manifest in his upright and faithful dealings among his fellow men. In summing up his life those words, concerning one of old, might be fittingly applied to him, "he was a faithful man, and feared God above many." While he is no longer among us in visible form, yet his example still remains - though "dead he yet speaketh." "
