Text: Michael Yergensen Tuesday, July 6, 2010 3:43 PM MDT Michael P. Yergensen, 67, of Roosevelt, passed away June 19, 2010, at the Veteran's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, from cancer.He was born Oct. 2 4, 1942, in Roosevelt, to Elmer Bertel and Annie Josephine Borg Yergensen.He married and later divorced Marylin Nagel.On Dec. 23, 1977, in Las Vegas, he married his current wife, Donna Harman Martines . They were married for 32 years.Michael graduated from Union High School where he played on the basketball team, was a star track and field member and football player.He joined the Air Force and wa s sent to Yale University to study Chinese for a year. Upon completion, he served in intelligence and was stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War. After leaving the service, he became a pioneer in t he computer industry.He established Datamax Computer Systems and contracted with NASA at Edwards Air Force Base. He developed data retrieval systems and other technologies for the space shuttle and te st flights. His job required him to travel all over the world.Although he was thoroughly involved in the computer industry, his heart was always on the farm. Michael had been a member of the FFA in hi s childhood and teen years. Later, he raised purebred Chianina with his father and is believed to be first in the basin to do so.Upon retiring to the farm, he leased out the land for farming and focus ed on gardening and making improvements. He, and his mistress - a Case 580 SK backhoe - also worked tirelessly in conjunction with the federal government to build a wildlife refuge area. With the hel p and support of friends and family, he was able to complete it late last year.Michael was an avid reader, learning about everything he could. He also loved movies, the good, bad, and just plain ugly . His pastimes included golfing and getting together with his family. Michael supported his children in all their endeavors and especially liked to attend their sporting events. He had a quick, witt y sense of humor enjoyed by people from all walks of life.Michael is survived by his wife, Donna, Roosevelt; children, Matthew C. (Chelsea) Yergensen, Roosevelt; Michael “David” (Neva) Yergensen , Lancaster, Calif.; William (Melissa) Yergensen, Santa Clarita, Calif.; Andrew (Holly) Yergensen, Heber City; Christopher (Vallerie) Yergensen, El Dorado Hills, Calif.; Kimberly (Tom) Hexamer, Lori ( Casey) Gish, all Las Vegas; Darrin (Stephanie) Martines, Cody, Wyo.; Steven (Denise) Martines, Deanna Burditt, all Las Vegas; and 26 grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Jo sephine; brother, Stephen Yergensen, sister, Phyllis Goodrich.Michael will truly be missed by his family.
