    !NAME-MARRIAGES-RESIDENCES: Letter and packet from (Guy) Ford CHILDERS in Feb 1998. John spelled his surname CHILDRESS in Surry County, NC, where he is said to have been born. Married 1st to Rody (Rhoda?). They went to Ashe County [NC], where he married 2nd to Elizabeth (widow SMITH) in 1834; remained there until after 1843. John [this one?] has been found [where?] in Davidson County, TN; later in Knox County, TN, where he spelled his name CHILDRIS, and where he died on 7 Jul 1859 [sic, made his will on that date]. Family story says three CHILDRESS brothers [sic] went to TN by way of Cades Cove [in Blount County, TN].

    On a Family Group Record for John CHILDERS, a note states that the John CHILDERS-CHILDRIS family Bible is in the hands of his greatgrandson James Theodore CHILDERS in KY (Kelly's father).

This John, born 24 Oct 1791 in Surry Co., NC. married 1st to Rhoda in Ashe Co., NC; eight children. He married 2nd to Elizabeth SMITH; three children. John Jr. died [sic] on 7 Jul 1859 in Knox Co., KY.

    !WILL-PROBATE: Knox County Court, KY; July session, 1859; photocopy and transcription sent by Betty ROYSTER in Apr 1998. Will of John CHILDERS produced and witnessed by P. J. ERNEST and Martin ROARK, proved by court. The will was dated 7 Jul 1859, signed with the mark of John CHILDERS of Knox County, who left all his real and personal property to his wife Elizabeth during her lifetime. After her death the land was to be divided between his two "younger" sons Alfred CHILDERS and Elias CHILDERS: 10 acres to Alfred, adjoining the land already deeded to him in Jul 1859; the balance to Elias. Daughter Martha CHILDERS is to get all the personal property remaining at wife Elizabeth's death. [His older children are not mentioned.] Signed with his mark.
