ied. Johann Bapt. Schlinger, Theresia's first husband, was a shoemaker a
nd a tenant from Oberjohnsdorf #8, a legal son of the dead Johann Schling

The following information is contained in "Germans to America: Lists of P
assengers Arriving at U.S. Ports," ed. by Ira A. Glazier and P. William Fi
    lby, Vol. 17, November 1865-June 1866 at p. 133: a W. Popp (age 41, ma
le and a farmer) came with his wife, Rosalie (age 40), son, Joseph (age 1
    4) and daughter Anna (age 7) on the ship "Thatcher Magoun" which came fr
om Hamburg, Germany and arrived in New York on January 6, 1866. Als
o, it notes that a J. Schlinger (age 33 and a farmer), came with his wif
e, Theresia (age 30), Johanna (age 7), Anna (age 5) and Theresia (age 3
). From this passenger log, it appears that the Popps and the Schlinger/S
lingers came over on the same boat from Hamburg. In addition, from the la
yout on the manifest (which was written as passengers deboarded rather th
an placed in alphabetical order), it appears that the Schlingers walked o
ff the boat immediately following the Popp family.

According to genealogy notes compiled by Dorrain Petron, Theresia's fir
st husband, John Schlinger/Shlinger/Slinger, reportedly died in St. Clou
d, Minnesota. His date of death is not known and it is not known wheth
er Theresia was living in St. Cloud at the time; however, it should be not
ed that it appears that Theresia married Wentzel Popp in Illinois, indicat
ing that she did not live in Minnesota prior to her marriage to Wentzel (s
ee paragraph below). No death record has been located on John Schlinger (
under any spelling of the name) in St. Cloud or any of the surrounding cou
    nties.

After John's death, Theresia married Wenzell, who then appears to have ado
pted her two living daughters, Anna and Theresia. Because Wenzel and Rosa
lia Popp had a daughter named Anna Popp, Theresia's daughter is referr
ed to as Anna Schlinger Popp. Both Anna's grew to adulthood and marrie
    d. It appears that baby Theresia died as an infant or small child (as s
he does not show up on census records of 1875 or later).

It appears that John died prior to 1870 as Wenzell Popp had married Theres
se when the Joliet, Will County, Illinois Census was taken:

1870 Census, Joliet, Will County, Illinois, at p.160A

    - Theresse 32 Keeping House "
    - Joseph 20 Laborer "
    - Anna 13 "
    - Anna 3 "
    - Theresse 4/12 "

According to Chuck Arnold, "Apparently the 2nd Anna is not the Anna SCHLI
NGER that was on the ship list [of the Thatcher Magoun] but a younger on
    e. POPP adopted her and she is also listed in Minnesota censuses before h
er marriage to Mr. COENEN. The elder Anna, Joseph's full sister, marri
ed Henry RIFENRATH. He died and she took the kids for a time to a relati
    ve in Blue Island IL."

According the the 1880 Census for Morrison County, Minnesota, Theresia Po
pp was the head of her household with three children living at home. Ther
esia was listed as 42 years of age, and her home country, as well as th
at of her parents, was listed as Bohemia. According to the census, her ch
ildren at home were: son, Francis (later referred to as Frank Jerald Po
pp in other records, and listed as Wenzell Popp on his birth certificate
), age 9; son, Edward, age 5; and daughter, Mary, age 2. Theresia's occup
ation for the 1880 Census was listed as "Keeping House."

More information available on the Theresia Popp family at 1880 Census, Min
nesota, Morrison County, Enumeration 85, Sheet 13, Line 34.

In the 1885 Census for Two Rivers, Morrison County, Minnesota (post offi
ce in North Prairie at that time), the following information is availab
le on the Theresia Popp family:

In the 1900 Census for Morrison County, Minnesota, Theresia Popp was list
ed as the head of her household and it stated she was 62 years of age a
nd widowed. It listed her country of birth as Germany. It also stated th
at both of her parents were German. According to the census, Theresia immi
grated to America in 1869 and had lived in the United States for 31 year
    s. It also stated that she was the mother of five children, four of whi
ch were still living at the date of the census. The census stated th
at Theresia could read and write; however, it also stated that she could n
ot speak English. She owned her own home, free of mortgage, and the la
nd was classified as a farm.

The 1900 Census provided that her son, Edward, was born in June of 1875, w
as 24 years of age and single. He was born in Minnesota and his occupati
on was that of a farmer. Theresia's daughter, Mary, was listed on the 19
00 Census as being born during December 1882, 17 years of age, born in Min
nesota, single and not living at home. Both Edward and Mary could read, w
    rite and speak English.

More information available on the Theresia Popp family at 1900 Census, Min
nesota, Morrison County, Enumeration 112, Sheet 3, Line 56.

According to her death certificate (filed under the name Thracy Popp), The
resia Popp died at the age of 82 years, 8 months and 28 days. It listed h
er maiden name as Slinger but did not list a first name for her moth
er or father. She died from cancer of the liver at 9:00 P.M., on Novemb
er 9, 1919, and was buried at North Prairie, Minnesota, on November 12, 19
    19.
