    • Married: ABT 15 JAN 1857 in Conwal Parish, County Donegal, Ireland
    • Note:

These are marriage banns, so date of 15 Jan 1857 might be date of ban payment entry and not actual marriage date. It is difficult to read: "Johann Kelly & Francesca McDade of Glenswilly" ab episcoper?; 5 shillings, 6 pence. Etaim (also) ? 3 3.0 & 3.0 grad consary?

Note: Article in "A Local History of Letterkenny" on athlete (marathon runner) Danny McDaid says he was born in Fahykeen, Glenswilly on 4 Aug 1941. Fahykeen townland adjoins Derrora townland and lies across the Glashagh River to the SE of the former. It is in included in Secor electoral division while Derrora is in Templedouglas. Both townlands are located in Conwal Parish, Donegal.

On the 1827 ordnance survey map of the area, there is a Glenswilly Roman Catholic chapel marked "in ruins". It is located in the SW corner of Drummacanoo townland, a mile east of the Neal Sweeney land in Derrora, and a little over a mile northeast of Fahykeen. It is possible this may be the reason the area is called Glenswilly, even though the name does not appear on maps, or else Glenswilly may just refer to the general area of the valley of River Swilly, "glen" being Gaelic for valley. The present day Glenswilly RC Church is about a mile south in the townland of Kilpheak.

      12 Sep 1999 - Gerry Mulgrew
"Going South West on R251 from Letterkenny, the junction with R250 near Foxhall marks the beginning of Glenswilly. It is a very rural area and was in the past famous for Poteen (illicit whiskey) and lawlessness. Not much different today, come to think of it."
