    ====================

    Both the 1810 Giles Co. VA census and 1820 Cabell Co. VA census for Robert Clendenen confirm this list of children for Robert & Martha Clendenen.

    1810 Giles County, VA Census Pg. 385:

    Robert Clendenen:
    2 M under 10, {Archibald S. b. 1801; Robert A. b. 1802}
    1 M 10-15, { John b. 1796}
    1 M 26-44 {Robert b. 1768}
    3 F under 10, { Juliet, b. 1805; ?Dorcas, b. 1806-1809?; ?Nancy b. 1810?}
    2 F 10-15, {? Winnie, b. 1797-98?; Mary H. {Polly} b. 1799}
    2 F 26-44 {Martha, b. 1772}

    =========
    1820 Cabell County, VA Census Pg. 82:
    Robert Clendenen:
    1M under 10, {Adam, b. 1811}
    1 M between 16 & 18, {Robert A. b. 1802}
    1 M 16 & under 26, {Archibald S. b. 1801}
    1 M 45 & over. {Robert}
    2 F under 10, {Amanda b. 1815; Elmore b. 1817}
    3 F 10 to under 16, {Juliet b. 1805; Dorcas ? b. 1806-09?; Nancy b. 1810?}
    1 F between 16 & 18, {maybe Mary H. but she would have been age 20}
    1 F 45 & over. {Martha}

    I believe this placing within the family is correct as Juliet & Dorcas were considered old enough in 1822 to sign as witnesses to the permission letter written by their father Robert when Archibald S. married Shada Pennington and census records indicate that Nancy's birth was closer to 1810. Winnie is placed as the first child in the family lists so I suspect that she was the first born daughter. Also, she was named after Robert Clendenen's mother.
    ======================
    Part of Cabell County became LOGAN COUNTY in 1824. In 1847 the area in which Robert A. Clendenen lived became BOONE COUNTY.

    LOGAN COUNTY HISTORY, pages 6-7
    "Robert Clendenen settled where Eli Gore now lives. He had three sons: Robert {A} Clendenen, who married Amanda Hinchman, daughter of William Hinchman; Archer {Archibald} Clendenen and Adam Clendenen. Robert Clendenen was sheriff of Logan County. All of this family moved to Minnesota about 1840."

    The information regarding Minnesota is totally incorrect. Four of the siblings migrated to MO about 1841 and Robert A. Clendenen migrated to Cass Co. Michigan in 1848. The rest of the family remained in VA/WV.

    Sometime between the 1827 Tax List and the 1830 Logan Co. VA Census Robert and Martha Clendenen disappear. The 1830 Census for seven of their children in Logan County, VA and Giles County, VA show that there is nobody of the ages Robert or Martha Clendenen would have been at that time, {Robert, 62 / Martha, 58} in any of their households.

    For this reason I believe that they both had probably died by then. Martha between 1820-30 and Robert between 1827-30.

    ==========================

    Shortly after this deed was signed Adam Clendenen, son of Robert & Martha Clendenen, migrated to Daviess Co. MO. His name appears in History of Daviess Co. MO as treasurer, Dec. 1839.

    Sometime between 1840/41 Nimrod & Juliet (Clendenen) Farley, James & Amanda (Clendenen) Russell and Elmore Clendenen all migrated to the area of Platte Co. MO.

    Perhaps the purpose of this land sale at this time was to provide them the money so they could do so as brothers John and Archibald are not included in this deed.

    =========================

    Father: Adam CLENDENEN b: ABT 1741
    Mother: Winifred ?

    Marriage 1 Martha ANDERSON b: 4 APR 1772
    • Married: ABT 1792 in Montgomery Co. VA
    • Note:
      John Clendenen has determined that Robert Clendenen was married about 1792, most likely in Montgomery Co. VA. However, there have been no marriage records found and it is possible that if they did get married in Montgomery Co. VA and their marriage was recorded there, the records may have been destroyed during the Civil War when the Montgomery County Courthouse was burned.

      Robert Clendenen first appears on the Montgomery County Tax List, page 12, Tax List C, in March of 1788. His closest neighbor was his father, Adam Clendenen. The previous year he appeared in the Tax List of his father, Adam, as "1 white male above 16 and below 21" so in 1788 he was 21 years old. They were the only 2 Clendenen's listed in Montgomery Co. Tax lists that year. They lived on Clendenin's Fork of Island Creek, near Adair's Run (now in Mercer Co. WV).

      The state of Virginia in the late 1700s was divided into a few very large counties and over time sections of those large counties were divided to make smaller counties. In 1806 the area where Robert Clendenen lived became Giles County, Virginia, so up until 1806
