    He came to TN about 1800 from NC. He was 15 years old at the time. He crossed the mountain s with his older brother. They settled in what is now Muddy Hollow. The old maps called i t Strange Hollow.

    James was the 6th child and second son of James Strange, Sr. He was born in NC in 1784 accor ding to the 1870 Census, or in 1787 accd. to the 1850 Census. Another source reported that h e was born in Halifax Co., VA, 1787, two years after his grandfather James Strange, the firs t died.

    James married Sarah about 1815 perhaps in Rockingham Co., NC. James Strange was listed in th e 1820 Rockingham Co., NC Census, but not there after.

    He moved to Union Co., TN, then to Grainger Co., TN abt 1817, then to Jefferson County, TN ab out 1825

    James Strange obtained a Land Grant to 50 acres in Cocke Co., TN in 1824, and was listed in t he 1830 Jefferson Co., TN Census. James acquired 200 acres in Jefferson Co., TN in 1832. On e James Strange acted as a bondsman in a marriage bond issued to Mariah Dyer and James McCubb in on 18 Aug 1831.

    James and his wife were listed as farmers, 65 and 60 years of age, with value-real estate wor th $50 and living in Dwelling Number 960 in the Census 23 Oct 1850, 13th District, Jefferso n Co., TN. They lived with young daughters with different surnames, believed to have been th e orphan children of two of their daughters.

    He was shown living on 67 acres in 1853 Jefferson Co., TN tax list. Same 1855 and 1856, but n ot on the 1866 tax list.

    1860 Jefferson Co., TN Census both still living. James 75, and Sarah 79 living with Jo Mill s aged 13.
