PHOTOGRAPHS
The following was written by his son, William O. [5347] Stidham, in 2009:
Asbery Stidham was born on August 15, 1904 in Barwick, Breathitt Co., Kentucky. He attended the local schools and worked with his brothers on his father's farm. In 1925, he joined the army and was stationed at Fort Thomas, Kentucky in Company G, 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division. He served a tour of duty assigned to the 27th Infantry Regiment, Hawaiian Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii in 1927-29.
He returned to the 10th Infantry at Fort Thomas where he met and married Nannie Jackson in 1933. The following year, he was assigned to duty in the Civilian Conservation Corp as a Sergeant in Tennessee for two years. He returned to Fort Thomas where his expert marksmanship with the rifle, automatic rifle, pistol and bayonet earned him recognition and a position on the regimental rifle team. He participated in the National Rifle Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio in 1937. After the rifle matches, he decided to make a career change. He was discharged from the army in 1937 as a Sergeant and went to work for the Chrysler Corporation as a Plant Security Guard until he retired in 1966.
While working at Chrysler, he used his interest and natural skills to build and construct three single family homes. He sold two and lived in one. After retiring from Chrysler, he became the neighborhood "fix-it" man. He built two dormers on existing houses and helped others with plumbing, roofing and cement work. He always kept a vegetable garden.
He was a gentleman of good character who was willing to help others. He earned the respect of his family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. He was proud of his country, employer and his family. He and Nannie had two boys, William O. and Gary Lee Stidham. He died in 1976 and is buried in Clinton Township, Michigan.
