John [294a] Steadham's sons were probably Samuel Steadham (b. ca 1802, South Carolina), William J. Steadham (b. 1816, South Carolina), and David Steadham (b ca 1817, South Carolina), all three close neighbors and enumerated in the 1840 Sumter Co., South Carolina census. (David and Samuel were living 8 houses apart, and Samuel and William were 12 houses apart in the 1840 Sumter Co., South Carolina census. William and Samuel were living next door to each other in the 1870 Calhoun Co., Georgia census.). Samuel was listed as head of household in the 1830 Sumter Co., South Carolina census. Samuel [445a] Steadham, William J. [445e] Steadham, and David [445d] Steadham are listed as "probable" sons of John [294a] Steadham due to their residency in Sumter Co., South Carolina. We have no proof at this time.
We originally thought the John Steadham listed in the 1820 Sumter Co., South Carolina census was the son of Zachariah [172] Stedham, Jr. Zachariah [172] had four known sons (ref. 1800 Edgefield Co., South Carolina census). We know the names of three: Zachariah [295] Stidham 3rd, James Howard [295b] Stidham and Adam [295f] Stidham. We had speculated the fourth son was John. However, we believe John's children were the above-mentioned Samuel, David and William J. Steadham listed in the 1840 Sumter Co., South Carolina census. From the results of the Stidham* DNA study, we know a descendant of William J. Steadham is from the Samuel [166] Stidham or Adam [102] Stedham line. Therefore, William J. Steadham (and his father) cannot be a descendant of Zachariah [172] Stidham who has a different DNA fingerprint.
Thomas Steadham is listed as a possible son due to his proximity to the other sons in Georgia. Thomas was buried in Terell Co., Georgia, the county next to the deathplace for William J. and Samuel.
This may be John Steadham (no age given) listed in the 1860 Early Co., Georgia census, residing in Octavia, Georgia and born in North Carolina. John [294a] Steadham's grandson, John B. [932] Steadham was living in Early County in 1870 and 1880.
Joseph E. Steadman Sr. (deceased), in a letter to Fannie Lewis dated 27 February 1964, claimed the John Steadham in the 1820 Sumter County was a son of John [187] Stedham Sr. of Mississippi Territory (southern Alabama). He said John Stedham Sr. went to Sumter Co., South Carolina ca 1819.
