John Victor met and married a Creek American. His father disapproved of this relationship, and practically disowned John Victor. John Victor managed to collect many of his father's livestock in Escambia County away from his parents, and settled there to raise his family.

He married his Creek wife, Mary McGhee, by Native American ceremony, and fathered 6 children. He later married her in a civil ceremony to qualify for entrance into the Masons.

John Victor was a helpful and generous settler and parent. He gave each of his children several hundred acres and livestock. He also helped many settlers get a start in the wilderness of southern Alabama. He donated 4 acres of land for a cemetery at McCullough. John Victor and many of his descendants are burried there. On May 4, 1975 the Steadham Memorial Chapel was dedicated at this cemetery in John Victor's memory. Twice each year, the Steadhams have a reunion at the chapel.

On October 2, 1988 Jack and David Stidham were guests of Temus Steadham at the Steadham Reunion, at which time they visited the cemetery and John Victor's home and homesite where he raised his 15 children, and provided meals to travelers on the nearby stagecoach road.

John Victor owned a store, sawmill and turpentine still. He also owned the first cotton gin in the area.
