I'm a fifty year member of the SAR , and also a life member of the Jamestowne Society. The asterisk* by a name shows a direct ancestor of mine. I have tried to provide adequate references, but my first postings in the late-1990s might not be footnoted. Please ask if in doubt! No entry here is "mass imported;" each has been individually added. This work is dedicated to those who landed at Jamestown, Virginia over four centuries ago, and to those already here who deserved a better end.

  • ID: I07441
  • Name: Peter Clarke 1
  • Sex: M
  • ALIA: John /Clark/
  • Birth: ABT 1812 in probably Bailieborough, County Cavan, IR 2
  • Reference Number: 7441
  • Note:
This kind note from Eric Reger, , "Hello Pat, The husband of my wife's first cousin, Bill Flynn, sent me to your work when I became interested in tracing my wife's ancestry. My wife is Kathleen (Knowles) Reger, daughter of Geraldine (Nash) Knowles, daughter of Emma Agnes (Clarke) Nash, daughter of Ellen Rogers & Thomas Clarke. Whew!!! What a mouthful. Anyway, that establishes my line of interest.

"You have a remarkable body of work. I've only reviewed the Clarke line and it has helped me fill in gaping holes on our family tree. Thanks for all the hard work.

"I did find one discrepancy on the name of the father of Thomas Clarke. You have listed John Clarke, born about 1812 in County Cavan, IR. I found an IGI Individual Record on Family Search for the marriage of Thomas Clarke & Ellen Rogers on 28 January, 1868 in Bailieboroughugh. In that record it lists Thomas' father as Peter Clarke.

"I've only been working on our ancestry for a few months now, so I don't really know where to go from here on that IGI reference. But I did want to let you know what I've found. Eric Reger"

The snippets below are collected on the Cavan Co. Research site at , as of 30 March, 2002.

--In the 1630 Muster Roll of the county, we find these Clarkes, bearing "no arms," where others bear muskets or pikes, et. al.

--Under Sir Stephen Butler, Knight, the Barony de Loughty: Thomas Clarke
--Under the Lady Waldrum, the Barony of Loughty: Peter Clarke
--Under the Bishop of Kilmoore, the Barony of Castlewaine: Edward Clarke

--In the Diocese of Meath, Co. Cavan, we find John Clarke marrying Hannah Donovan, 1798.

--In the 1796 Flax Grower's List for "Bailieboroughugh Parish, Co. Cavan, we find Owen Clarke listed next to Thomas Clarke, each with one "wheel," and further down the list Thomas Clarke with one wheel. An Owen Clarke is elsewhere mentioned in these notes.

--In Pigot and Co.'s Directory for Cootehill, Co. Cavan, we find in 1824 that William Clarke is a publican in Bridge St.

The children are given by an old family note from which the data on all except Thomas Clarke's family is derived-- the author of the note, Kathryn Clark, notes that she is the grandaughter of John Clarke below through his son Peter J. Clarke. It came to us from Fred Clarke's (born 1915) papers and to him from Agnes Nash, shown in these notes. I will footnote these families as derived from "A Note from Agnes Nash to Fred Clarke, about 1980, and citing Kathryn Clark of Utica, NY."

It should also be noted that the author of this note has all Clarks and no Clarkes, and so I shall name them that way except for Thomas Clarke, although he spelled his own name without the "e" in his citizenship papers. All his descendents use the "e."

It is not unlikely that these children were of two different mothers.

The notes give the children as (-- living in)

John Clark-- Bridgewater, probably Oneida Co., NY
Matthew Clark-- Bridgewater, probably Oneida Co., NY
    Ellen Clark Dorn-- Kansas
    Tom Clark-- Little Falls
Kate Clark Russell-- Bridgewater, probably Oneida Co., NY
    Patrick Clark-- Kansas

and "I heard my father speak of a Frank Clark who went to San Francisco and was never heard from after the earthquake of 1906...."

This very helpful note from a Clarke relative from the Clarke Rootsweb family site, March, 2002 from "Jack," :

"Pat, I read your file on the Clarke's. As you mentioned there are many Clarke's in Bailieborough. In fact there are many Clarke's in that part of Cavan. It is very hard to trace them. You do have one great possibility the marriage of Thomas Clarke and Ellen Rogers. 1868. You can get this record from the BMD office in Cavan. This will give you the name of the father of the groom and bride. More important it will give you the name of the townland they lived on at the time of their marriage. Then you can trace which Clarke's they belonged to. There are almost 30 lines of Clarke in the Bailieborough area. I know about five families myself from my research (there.) Have you ever heard anyone put a nickname on the members of your early Clarke's? This is how the Irish distinguish one family of the same name from another. Even on the same townland there could be several different Clarke family's.... My guess is you won't be able to much without a townland and if possible a nick name. Jack"

Note that I, the editor, have shifted birthdates to accord with census records shown for son John Clarke, aged 38 in the Bridgewater, Oneida Co., NY census.

This from Robin Riley on the Clarke GenForum page in 2001, although I just saw it in 2004:

"I'm interested in any info related to Ellen Clark who married Lowell Jennings They had 4 of their children were born in NY and the last two in Kansas Ellen was born in Ireland in 1837 they had the following children
    William J b 1854
    John Willard b 1855
    Sarah b 1858
    Charles Lowell b 1860
    Franklin P b 1864
    Edward Henry b 20 feb 1871
Any help in locating distant relatives would be appreciated. Thank you
    Robin Riley"

and also from Robin Riley, in Feb., 2004 on the Clarke GenForum #2602:

    "Pat,
I'm interested in your Ellen Clarke b 1837. I have a 3rd Great Grandmother who's name is Ellen J Clark born 1837 ,Cavan, Ireland birth info from her son Frank Jennings death certificate. Ellen married a Lowell Parker Jennings date unknown but first son William J. Jennings born 1854 in New York. they had 6 children total. Lowell was born in Rome, Oneida, New York. Ellen died 18 Mar 1898 in Ferndale, Humboldt, California. please let me know if this is the same Ellen as you have in your Peter Clarke family.... Other children of Ellen J Clarke and Lowell Parker Jennings are John Willard, Sarah M, Charles Lowell-- these children were born somewhere in New York. Then they had Franklin (Frank), Patrick, Edward Henry (My 2nd G Grandfather) Robin "

Robin might certainly have identified Ellen b 1837 in County Cavan. Names of her children match many Clarke(s), and if she were in Calif., from the note above, her brother Franklin was also, evidently.

Down-side is the Ellen Clark Dorn mentioned in Agnes's papers. Could she be Mrs. Jennings? I am going to make Ellen Clark the same as Ellen who died in Ferndale in 1898, but caution is due! On the positive side, we note that her son Frank was born in Kansas, where "Ellen Clark Dorn" was, and he died in Calif., although considerably after the 1906 earthquake.

"Hello. Just read your Blogs on Rootschat re the Clarke families.

"I am in Australia and we have been many years trying to track down our GGrandfather Edward Terrence Clarke born c1819 Meath Ireland.
His Death certificate states That his Father was Owen from Cavan ireland.

"We cannot find his Birth or even when he came out here to Australia .It appears he came out around 1840. His Death states 45 years in Australia. (He died 1885 aged 66years old in Albury New South wales Australia)

"My Grandfather was James Patrick Clarke born out here c1859 . This Edward Terrence may have been Terrence Edward as a notice in paper upon his Death stated Terrence known as Edward .

"We have no idea who he was connected to.
Is there anyway we could find a birth record for Either Owen or Edward.?

"Edward could have been married when he came out here,as Death certificate states more children than we can find out here. (No names listed of children). We have found an Edward son of Edward who came out aged 20 in 1840 as young married man and wife Bridget also aged 20.

" 'Crusader' ship from Roscommon which I think was a Bounty ship. Closest we have come to finding a person by this name.
Many thanks Ellen Phillips Queensland Australia at exbanana@hotmail.com
