    Clement Bridge was born at 23 Great Cheltham street, West Broughton.

    In 1901 aged 19 he lived at Rydal Mount (4 houses away from Highfield on Glebelands road where his future wife was living) with his parents and sisters. He was a Shippers Clerk.

    In 1911, aged 29, he was living at Rydal Mount, with his mother and sisters. He was a cotton manufacturer. His father had died.

    He moved to Meadehurst (next to Highfield but other way from Rydal Mount) after marriage with Mary Ogden in 1911 which James Ogden bought for them. Note Meadehurst was standing in 1901.

    He was a director of JB & Co (Jospeh Bridge & Company), Cotton manufacturers, responsible for the accounting side of the firm.
    Joseph Bridge and Co. was a major player in exporting textiles to West Africa from the 1930s to the 1950s.
    In 1940, the Directors were Hubert W. Bridge, William Taylor-Jones, and Arthur O. Bridge. The mill had 600 looms and the firm had a capital of 70,000 (somewhere between 13million and 18million in today's money).
    There are three large pattern books in the ABC (A. Brunnschweiler and Co) Archive, two of which are prints from Rhodes Print Works for Joseph Bridge, and the other probably represents prints done at Newton Bank. (Email correspondence from textile historian Dr Philip Sykas of Manchester School of Art in Dec 2015).

    In the 1939 register, he was living at Longmeade, Wilmslow, and was a Director of Limited Company. Manfufacturer of Cotton & merchant.
    He was living with wife Mary, and William & Constance Taylor Jones, Emma Partington, and two servants - Amy Palin (Cook), and Emily Smith (Housemaid).

    Printed cotton velveteen with brown ground patterned with repeat motifs all in black arranged in horizontal bands:
    a) upturned conical bell form, below which is a stand
    b) gold fish or carp, below which is a small spoon-like devise
    c) a winged face-mask, above an inverted U-shape, a tortoise and drum
    Repeat of b) and a), then b) and c). Separating these zonal bands is a line also in black of zodiac symbols. Labels in black ink read "signs of zodiac disclaimed". Two selvedges.

    Woven cotton. Cream white ground with floating warp in blue vertical bands, separated by either a) linked 'chain in red' or b) yellow and red twill stripes. In alternate rows the blue device bands show an orb surmounted by ER (partially inked out), followed by the sceptre and staff; or the ER and orb followed by a crown motif. (?to commemorate accession of Edward VIII?). Label notes 'Device of Royal Insignia Disclaimed'. 1 selvedge.

Cream white ground with floating wefts 'brocaded' blue and red bands; the blue carries meander of acorn and leaf, and the red: two rampant lions flanking a helmet and visor, interspersed with an armorial device of two half-moon axe-head and a spear, and a triangular shield, the latter bearing the date 1937 scored out in pen-ink (?to commemorate accession of Edward VIII). 1 selvedge.
