Note: GENERALNOTES: From his tombstone, it is known that David was born on 12 Feb 1797. From census records, it is known that David was born in Pennsylvania. The death records and obituaries of his children give conflicting information as to where in PA the family was from. The places listed include: Lancaster, Somerset and Union counties in PA as well as Montgomery county in OH. His son John' s birthplace is listed Union county, PA and Montgomery county, OH while John's twin Henry is listed as being born in Somerset county, PA. Using census records, it appears the most likely place the Spidels lived prior to Ohio was Union county, PA. One of the obituaries for John states that John was born in Union County, PA and came with his parents to Ohio locating near Dayton in 1836. In 1850 the family moved to Darke County, OH. The Spidel family was associated with the Church of the Brethren (German Baptists). At least two daughters and two daughters-in-law were members of the Church of the Brethren. Many grandchildren were also members. Using the Union County, PA census, a David Spydle can be found in 1830. The record for this David lists: David Spydle 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 3 females under 5, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 30-40 and 1 female 70-80. The male 5-10 could be Samuel, the male 30-40 could be David, the 3 females under 5 could be Susannah, Caroline and Lydia, the female 15-20 is unknown perhaps a sister to David or Barbara, the female 30-40 could be Barbara and the female 70-80 could be David or Barbara's mother. Also listed in the 1830 Union County, PA census near David is Max Spydle with 1 male 50-60, 1 female 15-20 and 1 female 40-50. In the Union county, Beaver Township 1840 census is Max Spidel 1 male 60-70 and 1 female 50-60. In the 1850 Union county, Beaver Township census is Marks Spidel 79 and wife Susannah 75. This Max/Marks and Susannah could possibly be David's parents.
