South of the bridge in Newport, Oregon lies the South Beach cemetery. This cemetery has suffered severely from neglect and vandalism, and is slowly turning back into forest. Before it disappears completely, I wanted to record what I could for this cemetery. I have gathered here all persons currently known or suspected to be buried here, plus some members of their family (that I could find). See http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/or/lincoln/cemeteries/s-beach-cem.txt for names and transcriptions.

"On the night of January 8, 1866, R. A. Bensell, G. R. Megginson and J. S. Copeland located the first claim on Yaquina bay. By the aid of a poor candle stuck into a poorer lantern the metes and bounds of the land were stated, on which the Premier (the first) steam saw-mill was built."

"Josiah Copeland and his two partners were not the "first" to file claims on
Yaquina Bay, but among the first. Many of the volunteer soldiers that later
worked on the reservation were on hand to stake claims in the minutes
following the opening of the bay for white settlement February 8, 1866.
Other entrepreneurs were on hand, too. It must have been a frenzy."
