    that read:

    "In the name of God amen, I Edward Cox of the county of Goochland and parish of St. James Northam being in good health and sound mind do make this my last will and testament revoking all others.

    First, after payment of my just debts I desire the following disposition of my worldly estate to wit, that my wife shall have one-third of my estate real and personal during her life and after her death, that it shall be divided among all my children.

    Secondly, I give and bequeath unto my son John Cox the sum of seventy-five pounds to him his heirs and assigns forever.

    Thirdly, I give and bequeath unto my following children to wit Henry Cox, Redford Cox, Claiborne Cox, Trent Cox, Elizabeth Mullins, Mary Cox, Anne Cox, Glafre Cox, and Obedience Cox to each the sum of one hundred pounds to them their heirs and assigns forever.

    Fourthly, as to the time when the above legacies are to be paid by my executors, my express will and desire is as follows, that my executors shall keep my whole estate together in such way as they may think most productive and advantageous until my youngest daughter Obedience Cox shall marry or arrive to the age of eighteen or in case of her death as such time as she would have been eighteen years old if she had lived and then after paying the above mentioned legacies to each legatee which is to be done punctually by them at the arrive al either of the said events and the residue of my estate to be equally divided among all my children to wit Jesse Cox, Sarah Cox, and all the other above mentioned. It is also my desire and meaning that if my wife’s part of the estate should revert by her death before the time prescribe for a division that it should be kept with the other two thirds in the same way by my executors until the time arrives, and then be divided as above directed. I constitute and appoint my two sons Jesse and Henry Cox to be my executors. In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this third day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five.

  • Note: and was proved in Goochland County probate court on the same day. Son Henry refused to serve as administrator, and son Jesse was out of state and absent. Wife Cecily and daughter Sarah/Sally Cox were appointed instead 5

  • Note: when an estate settlement was entered in court by John Lewis, Josiah Leake, and Alex'r Fowler. The settlement listed the slaves and other personal items divided among 9 children, Glaffree, Henry, Nancy, Trent, Claiborn, Redord, John, Elizabeth Mullins, & Obediance. Even though the other three children, Sarah, Mary, and Jesse were not mentioned in the settlement, they were alive at the time since they were named in the 1816 deed when some of the children transferred ownership of Edward's land to the remainder of the children 3
