    "Ramona and Round About, a history of San Diego County’s little known back country" by Charles R. LeMenager; Carlsbad Cole Library; Genealogy dept; GEN 979.498ra H2 LEM; says: "Sloane, who as a young man had been a journalist in Illinois, was known to reciprocate by helping run the paper when Dodson was under the weather. [D. N. Dodson owned “The [Ramona] Sentinel” newspaper from 1902].....Occasionally, when Sloane was incapacitated or out of town, D. N. Dodson filled in as pro-tem judge.....[Photo of Judge Sloane] [under picture] “JUDGE H. P. SLOANE WAS A CIVIL WAR VETERAN HAVING COMMANDED AN ILLINOIS INFANTRY COMPANY. Sloane was the first Ramona justice of the peace who had any previous judicial experience. He was also a journalist who filled in for Sentinel editor D. N. Dodson when needed. In turn Dodson, who had bee a J.P. in Texas, would fill in on the bench for Sloane.”

    "Sloane Canyon. The valley of the Sweetwater River below Loveland Reservoir.
    Hampton P. Sloane registered as a 70-year voter and rancher at De Hesa in 1894. He was important enough to be included in Guinn's History of California, 1181. The name is spelled Sloan on the Alpine 1988 7.5' Quadrangle."
