Note: ****** Connie Ruffey says: "It is my belief that Lt. David Sloan is NOT the brother of Capt. John Sloan but his uncle, therefore, a younger brother of Samuel Sloan, Sr. In the book on the life of Capt. Robert Orr, the first wife of Lt. David Sloan, Mary Scott, is listed as "Mary Sloan Hunter Scott." It took me a long time to sort all this out. The only child of Lt. David Sloan (d. 28 Aug. 1776) and Mary (Scott) Sloan, Anna Margaret Sloan, was born posthumously on 11 Jan. 1777. Mary (Scott) Sloan may have been married briefly to Robert Hunter, Sr., father of Rev. War soldier Robert Hunter, Jr. (who eventually married Anna Margaret Sloan).
Also, Capt. Robert Orr helped widow Mary (Scott) Sloan in proceedings with Lt. David Sloan's estate/property and could have been representing Mary against George Clark..... Mary (Scott) Sloan then married widower Capt. Robert Orr. They subsequently had one child, then Mary died. When Anna Margaret Sloan came of age, she married Robert Hunter in Capt. Robert Orr's home. Most of this can be verified in the Rev. War Pension files of Col. Robert Hunter and Lt. David Sloan. Incidentally, there are 16 DAR Applications filed for Lt. David Sloan which are all wrong. The daughter of Lt. David Sloan is that of Anna (Sloan) Cowden. In reality, she is the daughter of Robert Sloan (see his will of Westmoreland Co.) I came across this info. while researching the name of Capt. John Sloan's youngest child/son, Robert Hunter Sloan. Otherwise, I never would have found it. ****** In same letter, Connie says: I have recently ordered out a bunch of Westmoreland Co. Deeds in the name of David Sloan. From about 1796 to 1850, no David Sloan bought or sold land in Westmoreland Co. The 3 or 4 early deeds probably belonged to Lt. David Sloan (b. ca. 1745) or John/Samuel, Jr.'s brother (b. ca. 1760-1770) who was in Armstrong Twp. when it split off and became part of Indiana Co., Pa." ******* 2nd Lt. David, pro. third Lt Aug 9, 1776. Killed in battle Aug 27, 1776. Left a widow Mary and daughter Ann aged 11 in 1789 residing in Westmoreland Co. ******** Joanne Hughes in her research came across these items: 1) 2 pp. No. 1488 Donation Lands David Sloan Lt. 26 Sept 1787-widow-in trust for daughter Anna. correspondence 2) 3 pp. Letter of Attorney Robert Hunter Esq. & Anna Hunter (dau. of Lt. Sloan) Power of Attorney to James Brady Esq. to pursue claim. 28 Oct 1806. ********* 3d Lieutenant of Miles' Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment, 19th March, 1776; 2d Lieutenant, 9th August, 1776; killed at Long Island, 27th August, 1776. ********* Sources: 1.
