Note: DON'T TAKE ALL OF THIS FOR FACT!! I'm still trying work it out. {f mitchell} With the permission of Connie Sloan Ruffley, I have merged in the WFT Tree#773 into my dasebase, the original file contained over 7,000 members. Connie has stated that she has made a lot of improvements and additons since she originally submitted the family to the WFT. Please note the WFT file did not contain source notes. If you need sources please contact Connie. It is my general policy not to follow the female lines more than generation, I reduced Connie's file (ruffley.ged))down to about 1,200, so in affect I've trimmed off a lot of the descendants compiled by Connie. If you want to see them all, wait for the book, it's comming. ******** 1768: Franklin/Cumberland Co. PA. He was taxed for one grist mill, two horses, three cows, six sheep, and one servant. 1769: Samuel got land patent in Westmoreland Co. PA. ******** 27 Feb. 1773 & 11 Jan. 1774; Samuel Sloan was Justice of the Peace on Westmoreland Co. PA. ******** c1776: Pvt. or PS in Revolutionary War, Pa. ******* On Westmoreland 1783 tax list, 200 acres 4h,5c,12sh {Sr. or Jr.?} On Westmoreland 1786 tax list, 2 Samuels and 1 Samuel Jr. ******* 1790: Is the Samuel Sloan in Derry Twp, Westmoreland Co. PA the Jr. or Sr. ? ******* One theory is that Samuel Sloan Sr. is the father of Samuel Sloan, Jr. and Capt. John Sloan of Westmoreland Co. PA. The story of Capt John seems clear. The whereabouts of Samuel Sloan Jr. is subject to question. Did he m. Elizabeth Bran[t] and move to Butler Co. PA.? Connie Ruffley has disproved that he is the Samuel that relocated to the Gettysburg, Adams Co. Pa. Area., ******** Connie says:"I know that Samuel Sloan, Sr. was a man of wide influence and much land. He had so much land that, when it came time to pay his taxes, he couldn't pay them and had to sell about 6 big tracts of land in order to settle his debts. I think some of the reason he couldn't pay the taxes was that he loaned the Cont. Army about 10,000 Pounds and was never repaid. Local history of Latrobe/Unity Presby. Church has it that there were FOUR Sloan brothers who landed in the area at the same time. I still haven't been able to determine whether the 4 brothers were Capt. John and his brothers or Samuel, Sr. and his brothers. I'd be pretty sure it was Samuel, Sr. and his brothers, as well as a cousin or two, who all landed in Westmoreland Co. early. If Samuel, Jr. were born in 1763, then he would have only been about 6 when his father, Samuel, Sr. took out patents on land in 1769." Oct 2006: "Supposedly, Samuel Sloan, Sr. gave property to his daughters as their dowry. No one, however, has named his daughters. I believe there was a Robert Hunter in Westmoreland co. who married a Jane (?) Sloan but I don't know any more about it than that." ********* Mr. Sloan's farm was used for a long time the muster grounds for the militia of this part of the country, and the wood around often rang with the echo of the officers commands, while the soldiers engaged in mimic warfair, with sticks for guns. 1796 - 1883 History of Butler County, Pa.. ********* TwilaMS says: "I am searching for parents of James Sloan b. ca. 1770's m. Mary Hughes b. 1776 and William Sloan b. ca. 1770's m. Agnes Hughes b. 1779 who I believe came out of Derry Twp. Westmoreland Co. Pa. Agnes and Mary Hughes were sisters from Derry Twp. West. Co. Pa. Both Sloan families went to Armstrong Co. where they died. One source suggests James Sloan was son of Samuel Sloan of Derry Twp. Westmoreland Co. who supposedly immigrated from Derry, Ireland." ********* There are two early Nancy "Agnes" Sloan that were m. In Westmoreland Co. Pa. One of them is probably Samuel's dau but don't know which. see Nancy wife of Robert Fulton or James Hunter. ********** For an additional biography go to: http://www.pa-roots.com/~westmoreland/ffolder/sloan.html
