Note: Dates are weird. ****** Tombstone Inscription: In memory of John Sloan Senr. A native of Ireland who migrated at an early age to the United States and died in Fair Field District July 30, 1846 in the 84th year of his age. He Served for several years as a soldier in the War of the Revolution, and was honorably dischardged at it's closed. He died as he lived with the reputation of an hororable man respected by all his acquaintances and with the home of a happy reward in another and better world. {Picture made by E. A. SC.}[another ref. says date on stone is 30 Jul 1840] ****** Will of John Sloan: In the name of God Amen. I John Sloan of Fairfield District in the State of South Carolina, a citizen of the United States, in the full possession of all the faculties of mind, with which it has pleased God to endow me, the ' in body lebouring under decease, which I am apprehensive will terminate my mortal life, do make, ordain and declare this instrument to be my last will and testament, revoking all others. Imprimis. All my debts which are but few, are to be punctually and speedily paid, and the legacies herein bequeathed, are to be discharged as soon as circumstances will permit, and in the manner directed. Item - To my two children Thomas and Peggy, I give and bequeath the plantation on which I at present live, to be divided between them thus- All of said plantation on the north-side of the Winnsboro' road to my son Thomas, and all of said plantation on the south-side of said road (Winnsboro') to my daughter Peggy. Item - The tract of land on which my son William Sloan at present resides, containing one hundred and thirty eight acres mor or less, I give and bequeath to my son William, with this condition that he pay to my son Samuel three hunred dollars - one hundred dollars of which is to be paid annually. Item- To my daughter Jane wife of William Phillips I give and bequeath a negro woman, named Betsy - to her and to the heirs of her body. Item- To my daughter Peggy, I give and bequeath a negro man named Jesse - also a horse and Saddle; it is my will that my daughter Peggy shall have choice of the horses on the plantation. Item- To my son Robert Sloan, I give and bequeath two hundred dollars - said amount of money to be paid by my son Thomas, and not to be delayed beyond three years. Item- To my daughter Betsy, wife of Howard Robison I give and bequeath one hundred dollars - said amount of money to be paid by my daughter Peggy, as soon as she can well do it. Item- To my grand-children, John Sloan Robison and James Sloan Robinson, sons of my daughter Betsy, wife of Howard Robison, I give and bequeath one hundred dollars each - said amount of money to be paid by my son Thomas, as soon as he can conveniently do it. Item-I give and bequeath to my son John Sloan's heirs, five dollars - also to my daughter Mary Nelson's heirs, five dollars. Item- I give and bequeath to my son Thomas, the plantation-tools of every description, wagon, cattle, hogs and horses, with the exception of the horse to my daughter Peggy. Item- It is my will that the Gin and Gin-house be used in common among my children as they are now, so long as my son Thomas is owner of the land, which I have given him. Item- Should either my son Thomas or daughter Peggy wish at anytime to sell his or her part of land I have given them, then it is my will, that he or she (as the case may be) shall have preference before all others. Lastly, I constitute and appoint, my son Thomas Sloan and my son-in-law Howard Robison, executors of this my last will and testament.
