Note: Sgt. N.H. and Vt. Militia during Revolutionary War. widow pensioned. Grandson's bio says he d. with English Bullets still in him. ****** William Sloan (1756-1828) served as sergeant, 1777, in Capt. P. Allen's company, Colonel Herrick's regiment of Vermont Rangers; 1781, sergeant in Capt. Charles Nelson's company, Colonel Waite's regiment. He was pensioned as invalid, 1793. He was born in Westfield, Mass.; died in Smithfield, NY. ****** Janice Anderson provides from a letter written by Cyrintha Holt to Sidney Viel Holt dated June 4, 1931: Dear Sidney it has just come to me who Margaret Sloan was. She was your great grandmother, Margaret Sloan Holt. I have a bottle that was in her father's pocket in the revolutionary war. The neck has been shot off and the bullet that broke the bottle wounded him. He lay on the battle field for three days. The government issued rum to the soldiers at that time and he always said the rum was what saved his life. Jim wrote to William Sloan at Sandusky for history of the bottle and I have what he wrote rolled up and put in the neck of the bottle. {Cyrintha Holt;s husband, Jim, was a great grandson of William Sloan} ****** From Susan Sloan: "The History of Chenango and Madison Counties, NY 1764-1880" by James H. Smith. 1880: William Sloan, George Bridge and James Taft came in from Washington County in this State. Sloan settled on a farm on the south part of the Edson lot, which he bought of a man named Gillett who purchased of Edson, but remained only a short time. The farm is now occupied by Andrew Hallenback. Sloan cleared up the farm and afterwards went to live with his youngest son, Lyman, in the edge of Smithfield, where he died. His son William was a man of some prominence in the town of Smithfield. He was a Justice and held several other offices in that town. Other of his children were Josephus, the eldest Abigail, who married Amost Bridge, Olive, who married William Farrington, John, Orange who died young, and Betsey who was dement. None of them are living." End of quotation. (no Abigail on our Bible page perhaps she went by her middle name she may have been Sarah Abigail...to avoid confusion with her mother?) ***** Apr 2005: Susan P. Sloan is listing William as a son of William Sloan & Mary McMighel. I'm doing so also. f.e.m.
