Note: Based on naming of children of David & his siblings, it is probable that his parents were a William & Elizabeth Sloan. ****** B.H. Stribling says that he came to America abt 1773 and settled in Mecklenburg Co. NC. After marriage settled on west bank of Seneca river [Sloan's ferry] in what is now Anderson Co. SC. 1791 received grant for 1,500 acres near fork of Seneca & Tugaloo rivers. Build log cabin in 1794. Originally buried on his plantation but later moved to Andersonville Baptist Church Cemetery prior to the forming of Lake Hartwell. At death owned 9,000 acres 54 slaves & $9,000. Morgan Dist.: File #14 - To William Slone May 1781 - 250 16.8 To David Sloan May 1781 - 200 13.4 ****** Jan 2000, Beverly Sloan Shuler says: "David's brother (older?) William, served as a Lt., in same unit, if I remember correctly. Both got land in Franklin Co., GA, for their services - or rather, perhaps, just because they had served in the Revolution, and not directly "for their service." William got 400 acres (an Officers's grant), and David 200 acres (an enlisted man's grant) , on the waters of Martin's Creek and Coneross Creek. In 1787, this part of Franklin Co., GA, was put into Pendleton District, SC, when they moved the boundary line between the two states from the Keowee River to the Tugaloo River. This is really important in tracing his family. David was able to get lots of land (1900 acres, I've counted.) and slaves. William was not as enterprising as David, or just invested in Georgia land, rather than SC. Jo White Linn found David's and William's marriage records in Wilkes Co. for me, and as a special treat, a Catherine "Caty" Sloan who was close kin to them - a sister, I believe. She married first, Hugh Montgomery, then, in Wilkes, John Cleveland, brother of Benjamin Cleveland. David and Susannah Majors m. in 1784; William and Polly Perkins m. same year. There were two land grants there for William SLOAN, "on both sides of the Roaring River." It is a little settlement near Wilkesboro, NC." ****** In an unrelated pension application: Richard Gordon volunteered in the service of the United States the 16th of August 1781 in Wilkes County North Carolina in an expedition against the Indians for three months under Capt. John Beverly and Col. Hearn and marched to Pleasant Garden near the head of Kataboo River when we joined Gen. McDowel's army, was principally engaged in the Cherokee nation, what was called the middle settlements, scouring the country destroying Indian houses, towns, crops, etc. There were two companies that went in this expedition making near four hundred men that marched from Wilkes Court House to Pleasant Garden, one commanded by Capt. Sloan and the other by Capt. Berry, {Not really sure who this Capt. Sloan is, maybe he is the one on Mecklenburg Co. NC. f.e.m.} ****** Some researchers believe this is the same family: South-Carolina Gazette, No. 1657, June 22 to June 29, 1767. the article reads in part."to the Humane and Charitable, Charles-Town, June 24th, 1767....the ship(The Nancy) from Ireland.....young children laying intirely naked, whose parents had expired but a few days ago." listed in the COUNCIL JOURNAL, page 190 are James Sloan, 15/William Sloan,14/David Sloan,12. per the SC Gazette, the Ship Nancy, Samuel Hannah, captain, departed Belfast on 6/15/1767. ******* Originally buried in his own yard. Tombstones (graves?) relocated to New Andersonville Baptist Church on Dobbins Bridge Road, not far from Sloan's Ferry Road and Lake Hartwell. ***** For transcript of his will go to: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.sloan&m=875 Other info found at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sc/anderson/cemeteries/a360.txt ***** Same or not?
