    History of Bourbon, Scott, Harrison & Nicholas Counties, Kentucky Edited by William Henry Perrin Originally published 1882
    Scott County Precinct of Turkey Foot
    That portion of Scott County, now known as Turkey Foot or Election Precinct No. 6, lies in the north central part of the county, with Big Eagle Precinct on the north, Harrison County on the east, Oxford Precinct on the south, and Lytle's Fork and Georgetown Precincts on the west.
    The land is rough and broken, but is quite productive, and well adapted to tobacco raising. The timber was, originally beech, hickory, ash, mulberry, black walnut, etc.,
    The principal streams are the East and West Forks of Big Eagle, which rise in Oxford Precinct, and flowing northward unite in Turkey Foot Precinct, thus forming Big Eagle Creek. From this circumstance the precinct received its name - the fancied resemblance of the junction of these streams to a turkey's foot.
    The settlement of Turkey Foot Precinct dates back to a period more than ninety years gone by. Of the early settlers of the country now embraced in this precinct, we may mention William Vance, Asher Hinton, Benjamin Carr, - Reed, William Price, Abraham Fields, Benjamin Peck, EDWARD BURGESS, Peter Antle, John Gibson, Patrick Watson, John and P. Hyles, Cornelius Butler, James Sutton, Joshua Murphy, JOSEPH LEACH and others.
    Mr. Vance settled near Turkey Foot Post Office in 1790, on the farm now owned by his son, Capt. Joe Vance; Mr. Hinton and Mr. Carr also settled about 1790, on farms now owned respectively by their sons.
    Reed settled near Turkey Foot Post Office about the same time. He has a son, Eben Reed, still living in the precinct;
    William Price also settled about the same time, on the place now owned by Thomas Hyles.
    Jacob Price, his son, lives in the precinct. These early settlers, with the others mentioned above, are all dead, but many of them have descendants in the neighborhood, who occupy the lands of their ancestors.

    Absolom, Samuel, and Elijah Leach - KY
    Posted by: Alene Bradshaw Date: June 06, 2000 at 19:06:10 of 2799
    According to Leach family legend Absolom and Ebenezer Leach entered Kentucky about 1790 through Cumberland Gap. Absolom supposedly father to Samuel who was father to Elijah. Elijah born in 1792, married Mary James in 1817. Does anyone have any information on Elijah, Samuel or Absolom? They were in the Adair/Russell County area of Kentucky. Elijah was father to Mary Ann who married James Oliver Richards, my gg grandparents

    There was an Absolom Leach in the 1790 census of Monroe Co, WV. He witnessed the will of William Leach of Monroe Co, WV. Not sure how they were related. William's family moved to the Lincoln Co, Ky area after his death in 1808.

    In 1776, a part of Fincastle County, VA was taken to form Kentucky County, Virginia. Kentucky County was then divided by the Virginia legislature in 1780 to form the counties of Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln.
    When Kentucky became a commonwealth in 1792 , nine counties had already been created. They were Fayette, Jefferson, Lincoln, Nelson, Bourbon, Madison, Mercer, Mason and Woodford.
    Therefore, when searching your families, you may wish to look in Fincastle Co, Virginia
    , Kentucky Co., Virginia as well as those counties previously mentioned.

    ~NOTE:
    I just wanted to let you know I have not forgotten your kind delivery of the information listed below. I have been working on the info in between other activities. Monday, I had an eye cataract removed and a new lens implanted. My vision was screwed up for a couple of days but am now almost back to neutral. Still have a little dilation in my left eye, but the Doc says it will eventually return to normal. If it does, preliminary test indicate it will be better than ever. And, that's a good thing. I have been fighting blurry vision because of the affected left eye. I do have a couple comments re geography and legal descriptions. Kentucky became a state in 1792. It's entirely possible your Thomas/Thompson's parents were born in Virginia if they were born somewhere in Kentucky County, Virginia before 1792. Also, Grant County, KY, became a county from Pendleton County in 1820. If the family of Thomas was in that part of KY before 1820, they might have been in Pendleton County. A Leach family was on Eagle Creek in Scott County by about 1800 according to the tax lists. This same Eagle Creek drains through Grant County, KY. It's possible that Thomas and Lucinda settled on land near their Scott County kin in Grant County. That means Pendleton and Grant taxes, land records and probate files should be investigated. Have you done any of that? If there is nothing there, it means you have researched the question and found nothing. Sometimes, negative proofs are more powerful than positive proofs. Hi Shirley, I'm replying with this note to keep the thought chain together. I hope your company visiting has been pleasurable. I have been spending some time working on your husband's Thomas/Thompson Leach family. I have a couple of questions for you. Do you have written documentation that Thomas Leach was born in Scott Co., KY? Do you have any information, other than the 1850 US Census, that would place the family in Grant Co., KY? I have been researching the water courses to see which water system flows through both Scott and Grant Counties. Eagle Creek seems to fit the criteria. Eagle Creek is a relatively long stream. It creates the dividing line between several counties. Leaches are found on Eagle Creek (I don't know exactly where). Eagle Creek exits Scott Co, in the extreme NW, flows through the NE corner of Owen Co , flows north to Grant Co, flows west through the SW part of Grant Co, and eventually empties into the Kentucky river just inside Carroll Co at Worthville. The point of the prior paragraph was to locate where Thomas and Lucinda Leach might be found in Grant Co, KY in 1850 if they were related to some of the Leaches listed in my extractions of tax records for Scott Co, KY. Unfortunately, I did not run the extractions any further than 1826. This was a little past the time I perceived that my Joseph Fields and Susannah Leach arrived in Howard Co, MO. I also did not do the tax records for Owen or Grant counties. In 1822, both Jeremiah and Mrs Cassandry Leach are on Eagle Creek on Pickets purchase. In 1823, Cassandry is on Eagle in Todd's purchase. In 1824, I found no tax list. In 1825, John LEECH is on Eagle in Clark's purchase, and James LEAKE is on Eagle with the original purchaser not identified. 1n 1826, Cassandra Leach is on Eagle in Johnson's purchase. I think I know who was the husband of Cassandra. I'll dig that out later. Since she has no husband in 1823, they could not be the parents of Thomas/Thompson Leach. The important point is to try to locate some Leaches that were potential relatives to Thomas Leach. Based only on what I have listed here, it appears as if Jeremiah is of an older generation and would be of the age to be Thomas' grandfather. Jeremiah is in the 1811 tax records. John, or James may be of the age to be the father of your husband's Thomas/Thompson Leach born in 1824. I am pursuing this train of thought. Since I was going to write it down anyway, I thought a note to you would serve both purposes. Take a look at my Leach material on the web site <>. My wife, Connie, has jazzed it up quite a bit. The data stays the same, though. More later, Gerry
