    Starting as a cub reporter, Frederick ultimately became a f eaturewriter for both The Toronto Daily Star and the Toront o Star Weekly. Hewas a reporter for 30 years. As their Wa r Correstondent he wasoverseas for five years covering near ly every phase of Canada'sfighting forces, including Dunkir k, Dieppe, Sicily, Italy, D-Day andNorthwest Europe. He i s a member of Canadian Newsreporters Hall ofFame, inducte d in 1977 and was the author of two books, "Soviet Scene"an d "Variety Show". Before coming to Canada in 1912 he had be en ajunior master in a boy's grammer school in Ireland. Fir st job inCanada was in the basement of Eaton's, a large dep artment store.
    On the night of Victor Ernest Griffin's death, back home i n Toronto,Fred and his mother heard a knock at the door o f the apartment. WhenFred went to answer there was no one a t the door. He returned to theroom and later there was a se cond knock at the door. Again Fredanswered but there was n o one present. Once more he returned to theroom and even la ter again there was a third knock at the door. Hedutifull y answered once more to the same result of no one there. Th eknocks ceased but the following day they received news tha t Victor hadbeen killed while on duty.
