"Peter Bullard our great-grandfather, and a great-grandson of the lost seaman, was born in NC.May 13 1797. My father, John F. Harmon, then a boy of 17 watched his gradfather die, straightened him out and closed his eyes. Peter's father, John Bullard was said to be a highly educated man brought with him a large library, when he came west, in a covered wagon.

Peter came over into Illinois hunting, but in 1818 he went back to Princeton, Indiana and married Lois Wilson, daughter of Jeremiah Wilson and Jerusha Smith Wilson. Jerusha was a gran daughter of Captain John Smith who fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill, Massachusetts. Lois Wilson was born within hearing of Niagara Falls, in Western New York. After Peter and Lois were married they took all they possessed with them on two horses and started for Illinois. On their horses they forded the Wabash River where Mt carmel now stands, came near where is now the town of Olney, Illinois. That was about 23 years before Olney "began to begeen". They built a log house with one door which was held to with a wooden latch, with an auger hole below the latch,, through which one would run a finger and lift the latch inside.
Dr. John F. Harmon "Grandmother used to tell us about being in that cabin alone when she would see a finger thrust through, lift the latch and Indians would walk in with out invitation. They came often but did no harm. Grandfather hunted for a living, though he did some farming.
