  • Note: Yes, this John was the father of Alfred Hightower who married Charlotte Hodges. We visited the North Fork Baptist church Cemetery when we were there several years ago. Does anyone know for sure that Sarah died c1815? Or did she simply disappear? There was an older lady living with Jrad Hightower on the 1840 Cherokee Co, NC Census. (see below) It was probably not his mother-in-law, Margaret Murray, who died in Tuxedo, NC in 1841. Tuxedo, NC is just north of Traveler's Rest, SC. Could this have been Jrad's mother? The age is listed as 50-60 which would have been too young for Sarah (Dodson?) Hightower. Perhaps the person answering the questions got the age wrong. Did women lie about their age back then? <grin> 1840 Cherokee Co, NC Census 1 male under 5 Isreal P. 1 male 5-10 William C. 2 males 10-15 Jesse Dewitt & ? (missing brother or cousin?) 2 males 15-20 John W. and Alfred S. 1 male 40-50 Jrad S. 1 female Under 5 Elizabeth J. 1 female 5-10 Cynthia 1 female 10-15 Margaret 1 female 30-40 Nancy Ann 1 female 50-60 Mother? Sister? It is unlikely Nancy Ann Murray's mother. Margaret Murray died in 1841 and was buried at Freeman Cemetery in Tuxedo, NC which would have been quite a ways from Cherokee Co, NC. If this is Jrad's mother the age is wrong or else she was very young when Jrad was born. Posted these directions in a previous message but will copy them here in case you didn't get the other message. Hightower Plantation Take Hwy 25 north (from Greenville), turn left beyond Morgan store, at fork veer right which is a surfaced road. Circle to Terry Creek Road past Pentecostal Church to curve with high bank on right side of road. Climb bank and walk 100 yds into the woods. (Good Luck! and hope Morgan still has a store) Thank you for your response. Does Ruth Blackwell have an e-mail address? Sonia "William C. Toll for a carriage drawn by one horse or one mule was 12 1/2 cents, by two horses or two mules, 25 cents, by four horses or four mules, 50 cents; for a horseman, 75 cents; for a hog, sheep, or goat, 1 cent a head; for mules, horses, or cattle in a drove, 2 cents a head. (4) So heavy was the traffic that Hodges made money even after he paid the State $1000 a year and kept up 17 miles of road from the Gap to Moon's where the Greenville Road turned off to the right and ran by Jackson Grove." (4) South Carolina, Statutes at Large, VI, 369, 381. I own this book but it has no index by name. This is Col. John Hodges, who with wife Sarah Merritt, were the parents of Charlotte Hodges who married Alfred Hightower. They were also the parents of Elizabeth Hodges who married Davis C. Whitted. Jane
