James Littleton Burris came to Arkansas by covered wagon in 1839 along with his brothers, John and William C, and some of the Ashmore family. The three brothers are listed in the 1840 census of Pope County, Arkansas.

It was during the journey from Lawrence County, Tennessee that James and Elizabeth Adeline Ashmore fell in love, and they were married on November 12, 1840 in Pope County. Their first child, stillborn, is buried at the Old Baptist Cemetery in Center Valley (Pope County) Arkansas.

Although he was not the oldest brother, it was to James Littleton that the rest of the family turned in times of need. He raised three children of his brother William Carroll, and helped with the grandchildren of his brother John. In some ways, he was the patriarch of the Burris family in Pope County.

From "History of Pope County, Arkansas," (publ 1979 by Pope County Historical Assn and Hunter Publishing Co.) at page 177:
"James Littleton Burris was a tanner by trade, operating two tan yards and farming on the side. His saddle shop and main tan yard, across the road from his home, were located on Isabel Creek in a red oak grove near some springs. During the Civil War, James Littleton had a contract with the Confederate government to supply its troops with boots, shoes, saddles and harnesses. Soldiers were sent to his saddle shop to pick up orders. As many as eighteen men worked in his tannery during this period. Five of his sons and three nephews that he reared worked there as they grew up.

When the first son married, he continued to work for his father until he could leave home and become self-supporting. James Littleton built a tiny log house near by, and the bride and groom moved in. The other sons used it when their turns came and it soon became known as the 'weaning house.'"

It is my belief that James Littleton Burris had five children whose mother was Martha J F (Vick) Hill. Her son, James L Hill, stated on his 1888 marriage license for his first marriage to Clara E Richardson, that his name was James L Burris. In the 1870 census for Griffin Twp, Pope Co., AR., Martha is living with her widowed mother and three children, James just an infant, two farms over from James Littleton and Elizabeth Adeline Burris. Martha had tried unsuccessfully in 1867 to divorce her husband, but was told by the court she could not obtain a divorce until she first served him notice. She was told to return in three months with the evidence she had placed an ad in the newspaper as the court directed. She returned for the hearing, but apparently had not placed the ad, and her divorce case was dismissed.

In the 1880 census, the "widow" Martha Hill had three more children, and was still living two farms over from James Littleton Burris.

On 1 May 1893, James Littleton Burris was granted guardianship of Richard and Charley Hill, minors, in the Pope Co. Probate Court.

On 29 Oct 1895, George W Burris Sr was granted letters of guardianship of Richard and Charley Hill, minors, in the matter of the estate of Mrs. M J Hill, deceased. The letters were filed in the Pope Co. Probate Court. (George W Burris was one of James Littleton's sons by Elizabeth Adeline Ashmore.)

Over the next six years, George Burris served as guardian for Richard and Charley Hill, managing Martha's estate and filing periodic reports, until the matter was discharged during the April 1901 session of the Court, with final accounting submitted 8 Jan 1901, and approved 8 March 1901.

Richard Hill was no longer a minor, and the Court removed Charley's disability as a minor (he was 18 years old, according to Court records), so both inherited the remainder of their mother's estate.

I have discussed my findings in my genealogy blog, here.

James Littleton Burris was a Freemason, according to the symbol on his gravestone.
