Text: Josiah Newsom married Sarah Harper, whose family was in Marion County, MS. They moved to Caldwell Parish, LA about 1835. 1840 Census- Caldwell Parish, LA Josiah was first of the three Newsom brothers to move to Louisiana. Josiah has not been located in any records after 1842, and the assumption is he died. Orphans Court Records of Marion County, MS 1812-1859 page 64 in E. Russ Williams book of abstracts of the above records, page 213 of the old records.

Text: Nov. 1, 1981 her notes taken from the Marion County court records state that in 1829 Josiah was taken to court for "cutting" a Mr. Cooper. Rutelius R. Pray, attorney with the firm of Englehard, Silverburg, Lee and Atkinson issued a bill for $500 for this case. Issac D. Newsom, Josiahs brother, was making arrangements to pay this bill out of Josiahs share of their fathers estate. Rocrod Book 1823-1832, Columbia Courthouse, Marion County, MS. There are additional notes regarding Sarah not receiving a share in her fathers estate because she had been given slaves and land, and had refused to return them to the estate to be divided. The following year she and Josiah left Marion County and moved to Caldwell Parish, Lousisiana.
- Samuel Harper and Charles Stovall and Josiah Newsome are bound unto Walter Leake for $300, dated September 8, 1823. Samuel Harper elected and commissioned coronor, Marion County. Approval of C. Stovall and Josiah Newsome as securities to the above office bond. James Phillips, Presiding Justice, September 8, 1823.
