    Letter of Recommendation:

These lines certify that the bearer, Jas. Emslie, has served me nineteen months preceeding this date, as a baker, during which time he has conducted himself decently and honestly, and leaves me at his own wish to embark for America. He may be admitted into any Christian family with propriety.

Witness my hand this 21st day of April, eighteen hundred and thirty-four years.
    Will Webster
    4 Skeen Terrace
    Aberdeen

In corroboration with the above, we as elders in the parish of Old Macher and County of Aberdeen, recommend the above Jas. Emslie as a sober and active young man, and no objection is known why he may not be admitted into any congregation or society where Providence may order his lot. 22nd April, 1843(sic)

    OBITUARY
Mr. James Emslie died at his home in Cornwall last Tuesday morning at 2:30 0'clock, aged 73 years, 7 months, and 15 days. His illnes was very brief, he having been out of doors last Sunday morning, and was not thought to be seriously ill until about 11:00 Monday forenoon. His disease was congestion of the kidneys accompanied by a weak heart. Mr. Emslie was born in Scotland and came to this country while a young man. While in his native land he learned the baker's trade and for years has followed that business here. Up to within a short time of his death, he assisted or supervised the baking for his son, R.L. Emslie, who for some time has taken the main responsibility of the business. Of an active, energetic nature, he was ever ready to take his part in the world's work. A kind father, a neighborly man and a good citizen, he is missed by all acquaintances; but most, by the sons and daughters bereft of an affectionate parent. He is a father of Holland Emslie, the well known contractor and builder, S. Emslie, R.L. Emslie, Mrs. Hancon, and Mrs. Lunsman who lived in the house with him. The services are held this afternoon (Thursday) at 2 o'clock, at the home of Holland Emslie, the Rev. P.C. Creveling officiating.
