  • Captain Alfred Iverson HENDRY, MD., son of Robert HENDRY, JR and Nancy DANIEL, was born 29 Mar 1843 at Taylors Creek, Liberty County, Georgia. Alfred was a Medical Doctor. He studied medicine at what is now Candler Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. It is believed the school at the time was called Savannah Medical College. He was a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta; he began his practice of medicine in Lake City Florida (one year) and then returned to Liberty County, Georgia. He actively practiced medicine until he was about 90 years old. Three of his sons went on to become doctors. He named his first son, Charles West Hendry for Dr. Charles West his professor. He named another son, George Tracy Olmstead Hendry after a good friend and Classmate.

Dr. Alfred Iverson Hendry, MD organized and was elected Captain of the Bulloch Troop on 1 Oct 1861. The troop assembled in Bulloch County, Georgia, at the home of W. D. Brannen, on 6 Oct 1861, and mustered into service on 10 Oct 1861 at Savannah, Georgia. The Bulloch Troop was also known as Captain Hendry's Company. The troop was stationed at Camp Cumming, near Isle of Hope, Georgia from Oct 1861 to April 1862. He served from October 4, 1861 to May 1862 in the Civil War as a Captain of Company C (Bulloch Troop) 2nd Battalion Georgia Calvary, CSA (Confederate Army). He had to resign in May, 1862 due to ill health and a desire to relocate to Taylors Creek. Captain George B. Best succeeded Captain Hendry in Comman

He practiced medicine for a short time in Pierce County, Blackshear, Georgia (cir 1906) before returning to Liberty County.

Dr. Hendry died 15 Sept 1926, and is buried with his wife in Taylors Creek Cemetery. His tombstone reads: "Dr. Alfred I. Hendry, march 29, 1834 Sept. 15, 1926, Christ said to Peter Repent of thy sins and follw after me and I will in no wise cast thee out"

His namesake most likely was Alfred Iverson, who also fought in the civil war:
    SKIRMISH AT HINESVILLE
On Dec. 16, 1864, a detachment of the 7th Illinois Infantry (mounted) foraging near the right flank of Gen. Sherman's army which was then closing in on Savannah, mete here in Hinesville a detachment of cavalry from Brig. Gen. Alfred Iverson's brigade of Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler's cavalry corps of the Army of Tennessee. Wheeler's corps and units of the Georgia Militia had offered steady resistance to Gen. Sherman's "March to the Sea" from Atlanta to Savannah. After a sharp skirmish through the town, the Confederate detachment withdrew toward the Canoochee River to rejoin Iverson.
