    Thomas served in the Spanish American War in the Philippine Islands and also won a Medal of Valor from Pacific Telephone and Telegraph. Registered WWI Civilian Draft Registration. He retired from Pacific Telephone and Telegraph after 32 years.
    Thomas patrolled the 72 plus mile single toll telephone line between Lewiston and Grangeville each summer. He would set out in a covered wagon pulled by horses and repaired the lines and poles as he followed it along. In the winter he would use snow shoes to repair breaks in the line.
