I became an early settler in the Willamette valley- -the first in my neighborhood. My nearest neighbor, 12 miles distant, was J. C. Avery. When and where I settled, and still live, there was none to dispute my choice of location. At present there are no less than four jumpers upon my claim, and one of them almost within a stone's throw of my house...Robert GRIMSLEY, son-in-law of Isaac WINKLE, jumped my claim in '51 Winkle said he had measured my claim before Grimsley went on it, and that I had only one mile square. In '52 CRIS and STARKS jumped it. They set a stake in my field...BARTLEY [sic] said I claimed six sections of land. His younger brother refused to testify that I had made threats against claim jumpers. John THOMAS now occupies the house that MAHONEY built..."
