Spectator 18 Feb 1854: Gross Persecution: "I have been beset by the bitterest of enemies. I became an early settler in the Willamette valley- -the first in my neighborhood. My nearest neighbor, 12 miles distant, was J. C. Avery. When and where I settled, and still live, there was none to dispute my choice of location. At present there are no less than four jumpers upon my claim, and one of them almost within a stone's throw of my house...Robert GRIMSLEY, son-in-law of Isaac WINKLE, jumped my claim in '51 Winkle said he had measured my claim before Grimsley went on it, and that I had only one mile square. In '52 CRIS and STARKS jumped it. They set a stake in my field...BARTLEY [sic] said I claimed six sections of land. His younger brother refused to testify that I had made threats against claim jumpers. John THOMAS now occupies the house that MAHONEY built..." Nimrod O'Kelly Benton Co., O.T., Feb. 11, 1854

    WESTWARD TO OREGON
Asa Stark is one of the younger of Ashael and Sarah's children. He was born in Cicero, Onandago County, New York. He married Deborah Moore, granddaughter of Charles P. Moore and wife Amy. The Moore family lived in Monroe County, New York at the same time that Ashael's family did. Deborah's grandfather died December 27, 1814. He was a lieutenant in Colonel Hopkins' regiment in the War of 1812. Deborahs' father and mother were Charles P. Moore and Mabel Heath. Siblings were listed as Deming Moore, Anna Moore, and Betsy Moore; all of Washington County, Indiana. Asa's father, Ashael, died in 1821 in Washington County Indiana. After Ashael's death, the family moved to Edgar County, Illinois.
From the Central New York Genealogical Society Publication, Tree Talks, Volume 23, no.3, page 143, Sept. 1983; "Oregon Donation land--- people who applied, #4060, Asa Stark, born 1796, Onondago Co., N.Y.." We find this family in Oregon in early 1850's. They probably arrived about 1851.
