From the Rambler interview of Kate Owens: "Captain William Phelps was Richard Phelp's father. Captain Phelps once ran a steamboat on the Illinois River named White Cloud. I, (Kate) once made a trip to St. Louis on this boat. Mr. Rawley was the teacher who used the rod on Richard Phelps for saying his name was Dick. Richard Phelps never attended school again."
