  • ID: I142
  • Name: Samuel Francis
  • Sex: M
  • Note:
The parish register of St. James Episcopal Church, Baltimore County lists the birth dates of three children of Samuel and Ann Francis: Charles, b. 12 May 1780, William, b. 2 Oct 1782, and Sarah, b. 23 Aug 1790. A Samuel Francis, who may have been the same man, was listed in the Baltimore Co. tax list in 1783 for Middle River Upper Hundred and Back River Upper Hundred. These Hundreds include the area where St. James Episcopal Church is located and the area which later became the Second District, where William Francis, our ancestor, lived in 1840 and 1850.

Based on the information we have, the connection between Samuel and Ann and subsequent generations is only circumstantial. However, we can argue as follows:

    A) Samuel's son Charles apparently had sons named Joshua and Charles Jr. The 1850 census shows Charles Francis (b. Abt. 1780) living in the household of a younger Joshua Francis (b. Abt. 1805), presumably a son of Charles. Another Charles Francis (b. Abt. 1815), is listed on his marriage license (to Sarah Carter in 1842) as Charles Francis, Jr., and thus was presumably another son of Charles.

    B) Charles Jr., Joshua and an Isaac Francis (b. 1821) lived near each other in 1850, based on census data. In the 1850 census, Charles Jr. and Joshua lived about ten houses apart and Isaac lived between the two, two houses from Charles, Jr.

    D) James W. Francis, our ancestor, lived near Isaac in 1860 and near Charles Jr. in 1870 and 1880. According to the censuses for 1870, Charles Jr. and James W. both lived in the 9th District of Baltimore Co. and both had children who were cotton mill workers. The 1880 census has both listed in the village of Woodberry (still within the 9th District) where cotton mills were located.

    D) A number of Samuel's presumptive children and grandchildren are buried In Fork Methodist Church Cemetery in Baltimore County. These are: Charles, son of Samuel; Isaac, presumptive grandson of Samuel, and Isaac's wife, Maria; William, presumptive grandson of Samuel, and William's wife Elizabeth R.; and Charles S., William and Elizabeth's son, presumptive great-grandson of Samuel.

    E) There are a number of names that recur among the presumptive descendants of Samuel. The names William and Charles recur in Samuel's presumptive children and grandchildren. The names James, Charles, William, Mary, Martha, and Sarah recur in the presumptive great-grandchildren. While it may be coincidental, the pattern of names supports a possible family relationship.

    F) It is highly likely that there is another branch of the William / James / Richard Francis family. A Charles Francis, presumably a relative, witnessed the 1875 marriage of Richard Francis and Abiralla Carson. Richard had no sibling named Charles; Richard's father James, may have had two male siblings according to the 1830 census (Baltimore Co., 2nd Collection District, p. 70), but their names are not given in the census.

If these observations indicate family relationships and not just coincidence, then it is likely that William, our ancestor, and Charles are the children of Samuel and Ann recorded in the St. James parish records. Samuel does not seem to have been a landowner, nor did he leave a will or estate records in Baltimore Co. If land or testamentary records existed, they might have conclusively identified Samuel and Ann's children.
